I'd like a opinion on some thing.
Jimmy's building me a 5 string bass (RA5) with black blocks and binding.Right now the bass is spect CAR. Daily I go back and forth with this and Black.
What do you think? It will like this.
Or should I go Geddy?

i think the candy apple red looks great worn in, and it'll be distinctive, but i think i personally would prefer black for a new bass. Its going to be awesome either way!
I say go with the red. Black is very slick and all that, but how often do you see this combo vs. the Black w/ Black (Geddy) combo? It's classy, it's old school, and I think it will look even cooler as it gets older. Can't go wrong either way, though....... Is it going to be a LM, LG, LS, or Standard?

That it's a liitle different is what keeps me loving that.
The model is called RA5. It's based on a 72-74 alder bodied Jazz bass. I think I'm getting #1, I know there's four being made. Because it's period apropriate ( and Cheaper) I went with Poly on this bass so it will take a while for it to get that worn look.

Thanks for hipping me to the RA5 thing. Was very unaware of them. Definitely go with the red now. If you love that pic, it will be like owning a 5 string version of that bass. There are too many Geddys and Geddy look-a-likes around anyway. Make this one more your thing. Congrats on the project. When are you expecting delivery?

Love the way it looks. You think maybe... just maybe that what attracts you is the worn look? but overall, I don't think Jimmy would make a bad looking bass. But that Bass does look slammin'. But I love my color too. But again can't go wrong with that color bass. Blocks and all.

Yes, I'm having a difficult time amagining it with out all that crome and fresh coat of paint. Possibly a black pick gard.
Black is easier to vision in my head. I also really like the Geddy thing.

Black with a Black pickguard would be scary slick... The Red has a certain thing to it..... Maybe it's because I hardly ever see that combo.......
The Geddy Lee J-bass is so popular for a reason.

As far as the red vintage J pics you posted, in comparison to AC CAR, I would say that the colors looks totally different to me.
The AC red's I've seen have all been amazing in how brightly metallic they look, and the color really "pops".
I think the geddy look will be great since the bass is poly. and it's gonna look new for a long time. If the bass was nitro, I would say CAR.

Any owners out there feel comfortable taking your A-C around in the gig bag it came with, or do you find yourself wanting more padding from a Portabag or something?

I really don't know much. I was talking to Jimmy and mentioned blocks. To be honest I was refering pearloid because I had seen the white one that there are pics of in this thread. He brought up four basses he was building. Alder bodies,70's spacing,black blocks.Jimmy said 2 were unspoken for. Even though he didn't say it out right I believe a white one will be for Ruben Rodriguez. He talked about how they we sceduled to be done by a trade show. Turned out though,due to production delays, that didn't happen .
I believe the guy who is doing the actual inlay of the blocks used to work in the fender custom shop. I don't know if they will be ebony, I dought it though because the old fenders wern't,right?

I think most basses come pretty much standard related to gig bags. Jimmys gig bags are pretty much standard. I like the "Undercover" that some of the company's use. But there are many good cases out there and with a bass like this I guess i should be looking for one. Seen any great one's around. I did see the undercover case on Bass Central. I have an old one dated back to 1989. Came with a Musicman 5 which i believe might have been the first year of the MusicMan 5. But Im not exactly sure. But anyway the case is still good.
Jimmy's bags are pretty basic (I believe they come from the same company as the LakLand single bags.. they seem the same). I would not use it quite frankly.
I use a 'first generation' inCase Slim Bag (IMO, the best bag ever made... however they aren't made anymore, and the newest version has some design issues I don't like). The Sadowsky Portabag is a close second to the original Slim Bag IMO, and is a GREAT fit with the A-C. Highly recommended.

Thanks guys! +1 on the Sadowsky Portabag. I really dig how thoughtfully designed it is. I'll probably pick one up for my A-C.
While the gig bag is not up to the standard of a couple of my other gig bags (Levey's LM88 in leather) only because of the toughness of the leather, I don't have any problems with carrying the bass around. I think that the protection is just fine for my usage. However, I don't put my bass in the back of the truck with the amps - it rides up front with me.
