I was thinking about taking some time off to go to bass player live, but it turns out that the army band is paying to send me and my jazz combo to a jazz improv conference/workshop in NYC the same weekend!

Maybe I'll be able to run over to BP live for a little while and say hi to jimmy and the gang!

I thought he (Chris Chew) had been playing Lakland's but I've seen several pictures of him recently playing other high end basses (Low End) though I've never seen him with an AC.

I've been talking to Kirk and he has me pretty convinced that my next Bass needs to be an Alleva Coppolo (probably an LG-5). I'm going to call Jimmy soon and talk about what I want...just need to take care of a few financial loose ends here before I pull the trigger...

Please explain Jimmy's burst finish nomenclature to me. This Lefty '59 burst was seen earlier in this thread and is in Jimmy's Sold archive.

I think the first picture is actually of a Tobacco Burst and is just mislabeled in the Sold archive.
I don't know if the LowEnd bass is a '59 or Sunburst. Is the difference between '59 and Sunburst the width of the red?
Will a burst finish look roughly the same over Alder or Ash? Are all of these poly finishes?

There are so many orders on this tread for the LG models. Why is that? Just curious. Believe me they all sound great. I wonder how many have tried the LM or the LS as far as a jazz type bass goes. The LM to me does not sound like a 70's fender. Also alot of the players here want light basses. Have you considered a heavier bass? The sound will be different.
Do you feel the LG is closer to the 60 fenders therefore the LM will not sound like that? To me the LM has alot of punch to it and the 70 basses did not have hand wound PU's and the wood along with the making of did not compare to the 60 fenders. You think this is the reason for the lack of interest in the LS and LM and standard A~C in this thread? Im not saying one is better than the other but just out of curiosity.

The reason why I went with an LG is because I already have two maple necked basses that pretty much cover the 70s jazz tone. In fact, now that I'm looking at my bass collection I notice that all but one are based off of a 1970s design! I went for the LG5 because I wanted to diversify and because I fell in love with paul turner's tone.
(although I didn't go with the aguilar preamp and brazilian rosewood, I know mine will be in the ballpark)

I went for the LG because I have been looking for a bass that will give me that old school Fender sound from the 60s.I'm pretty much convinced that nobody out there is going to come as close to Jimmy has to capturing the 60s vibe.I already have a '75 Fender that gives me a great slap sound that's aggressive and bright, not to mention that I have always lusted for a Celinder Update 5 to replace my Fender someday. I was really looking for something warm and vintage as a real contrast. My buddy Ethan (who's on tour with Christina Aguillera) owns one, and after he endorsed them in his Bass Player article I knew that it must have been really something. Then I saw the sounds clips at Jimmy's site and was further blown away by Turner's playing. I went to NYC in the spring and tried one out and it was all over.After I came back from some shows in Florida, I took the plunge. I honestly don't know what the diffrence is with the standard. It seems identical to the others. Didn't know about the LS until recently. I only got to play Jimmy's LG-5 and Kirk's sig bass. I feel in love and knew that my search was pretty much over. The options really sealed the deal for me as well.

Thanks for the input. After I found the picture of the Tobacco Burst in the Color Section I was pretty positive about the Sold Archive labeling mistake. When something is written wrong it can be difficult to believe what you know to be right. The Sold Archive also has finishes called Sunburst and there is no Sunburst in the Color Section. It makes it hard to decide what finish you are liking.
The 58-59 Burst looks to be a two color burst, while the Sunburst has the added red layer in between.
It makes since to me since I'm fairly sure that the 3tone sunburst wasn't around as early as 58-59, but maybe I am wrong.
If you give jimmy a call, I'm sure he can help you in fully understanding the differences.
I believe that he must be extremely busy right now, preparing for the BP Live booth, so emails and website updates could be overlooked. I would give him a call if you are seriously interested, or if you just have a few questions. He's been nothing but helpful and willing to take the time to answer all my questions.

I just spoke with jimmy today... he is like you said working overtime on sunday morning.. he is winding KBP4 pups and 5 string pups.. I know he is trying get all things ready for bass player live... its only him, marco and his girlfriend working the whole thing...
I spoke with him last night before my gig and he was still at the shop until 10 pm.... whew.....
I hope he does not get burned out.,,, The finishes above all look like the poly basses to me.. the 3 tone nitro that he has done is not up there at all.. but when you see it you will poop.. becasue it looks like a 60s sunburst...
these are nitro but shot under horrible lighting at NAMM.. so they look weird

i can say with about 95% certainty that you are 100% correct.
The poly SB do look different in texture and in hue.. the Nitros have that real 60s yellow in the middle.... and after they age i dont think you could tell the difference.. the firt time i saw one of his nitro SB from the backside i thought it was a pristine fender.. then i looked up and saw the headstock...

I figured the reasons you stated is why some may shy away from the LM's and LS's. But my Lm does not sound like any 70's fender. It really is a 60's with some added punch. But again I never heard any of his basses sound bad and they are all great. I just put it out to see some of the reasons why many may shy away from the others as many want the 60's fender sound. To me all of Jimmys basses sound 60ish with alittle this and a little that depending on the model.
