So i talked with Jimmy today. You guys should have heard the pride and excited tone he had in his voice as he described a bass he mailed out to a guy in Canada today.Apparently this was the first LG-5 he's completed using the Dalbergia Negra rosewood that has his pre amp in it. The White one Paul Turner has and the Sonic blue Dave Boonshoft (see Pic) bolth have the Aguilar pre. He was bragging he thought it was the best bass he has ever built!.....

So... anyone on board live in Canada?,Got a blue bass in the mail?

..... ....it wasent a blue bass...it's a gorgeous sunburst....and I drove it home tonight from NY....had about an hour playing low vol as its late...but its everything I hoped it would be for an alder/rosewood old school vintage Jazz in a 5..and ALOT more

Jimmy and I were grinning last night and this morning ( he did say several times that it was the best bass he's built so far ..which I admit was kind of cool to hear).
Last time I was in NY about 4 months ago I picked all the wood...the darkest tight grained Dalbergia and old growth alder with a little more weight to it (all the Dalbergia looks amazing BTW)...even got to pick out the tort guard.

This whole experience has been first class. Jimmy MUST be given all props for caring about and being passionate about building as close to vintage Fender style instruments as you probebly could get in 2007. From the rarer old- growth wood, the proprietary pups, the finishes, the transparent but supportive preamp, and staying true to the original designs , I guess it was an opportunity hard to pass up. This thing sounds old and rich and has the vibe it was built to have. I know all the owners on the thread have had similiar experiences .... and I've been admiring all the basses here.

I just have to add to the chorus of how good Jimmy was/is to do this with....a "friend" building something special and rare - always avail , friendly, personable, reliable with any dates or information, and focused on what the vision is for his instruments. A great custom - bass experience...and then you end up with a bass like this.....what more is there??

I'm pretty sure yours will be great too with the same specs.

I was lucky enough to play just about everything he had - which was quite a bit considering the show- and they were quite consistant overall. We weighed many of them and even that was amazingly consistant with most pretty well within about 1/2 pound of each other. Nothing was what I would call heavy or even medium- heavy.....might have to do with the quality of the old- growth wood he uses too (nice and dry!)

Nice! I am still completely, totally digging mine, and rarely play anything else at this point. You will like it more and more as you get it on gigs... it sounds SO good in a mix! My two favorite rigs with it at this point are the Thunderfunk/Aguilar DB112 x 2 stack (old school with a little bit of edge) and the Markbass LMII / Epifani 410UL (the funk machine.. warm, but very 'big' sounding and with some sizzle up top). These basses the just the bomb IMO.

It does seem that the 60's positioning/alder/RW type thing is Jimmy's main love, and I can see that, since most consider that era of J as the definition of 'vintage'. I continue to be surprised at how much of a late 60's vibe my ash/maple LM has also, though, although I would guess with a little more zing up top (I do take the edge off a bit with the passive tone control). Really nice stuff. I was always planning on purchasing an LG model in addition to the more 70's one I have, but the LM sits closer to that vibe than it does to my modern Sadowsky J tone, or the '70's on steriods' Celinder Update.

I'm getting the orange one..... Wow.didn't know that this was only the second bass he's built with those specs.Makes it even more special.... I remember seeing you test out Jimmy's basses at his display........you were realy killing it with that Limited I must say. I saw your bass body when I went on the shop tour the first night......Easily the best Sunburst finish I have ever seen..... And yes that was Ruben's bass...Oscar Cartaya took a pic with it to tease Ruben because he's overseas and wants his bass badly!

Ya know, now that I've played one, I can really see what you are saying..I think , IMHO, that the LM is designed to sound more like a natural 70s J BEFORE the super-duper preamp is installed that makes it so aggressive. It really comes close to a 70s J I played at Rudy's a while back. It seems like some builders just seem to go over the top when it comes to preamp selection and that gives it the extra...pop!

That LM was really something..There was one guy there, a friend of OScar's that literally played it most of the second day..I know he loved it.......I guess in the end, he didn't want to take the $4000 plunge.....

+1 and well said. I think most of the Boutique J designers/manufacturers/luthiers automatically think of the more J on Steroids Marcus Miller 70's thing when they design a '70's' J version in their line. The LM is a much more passive, warm sounding model... as if there actually was a 'pre CBS' 70's model J Even acoustically, the 70's inspired Sadowsky basses and Celinders (as an example) have a huge pop and sizzle and aggressiveness, even when not plugged in. I don't know what kind of magic maple and ash Jimmy uses, but it's a different thing than most.

OK.... I take back what I said a few post ago... I do want another one!
