best bang for the buck is an EMU 0404 USB unterface IMO but it depends on the features you want.

Yes, the holly single-cut is drool inducing.
I will be having a single-cut built in the next batch. I am still nailing down the final details; Cliff has been more than patient with me! It will have a tulipwood top; a birdseye maple fretboard with purpleheart bindings; and some sort of purpleheart pickup cover and ramp configuration.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a determined guy and a glutton for punishment, but fanned and unlined is where I draw the line!
I suppose it might have beneficial to be a lined player (since apparently you can't intonate beyond the 12th position [in case you're following the most epic lined vs. unlined debates.
]). Regardless, the fact that Cliff can get a good B in 32" scale should allow me a much better choice of strings for the upper register and should make the slightly wider neck easier to play.

Meh, nothing useful, just how lines are cheating and unlined people can't play the 2nd octave. A guy had the audacity to PM me and say that my music reflects not practicing. Gotta love the e-tough! That hurted my feelings!
It's not as much about tension of the B since Cliff tells me it's more about rigidity of the neck that establishes the tone.
I'm more about shortening the scale length for the high strings. It has been a while since I've done the math, but between going from 34" scale to 32" and tuning the C and F to B and E (essentially tuned like a 7 string guitar), I think I'll be able to use thicker strings. This is all in theory since I'm unaware of anyone doing this.
The problem with fretless is that an F string is really thin. With a wound string, it's very thin sounding. If you go with a plain steel string, it's more like a sitar than an actual fretless bass.
The funny thing is that on a fretted bass, string selection isn't nearly as critical.
I have the little brother of this unit (EMU 0202) and it works a charm. Reliable, easy to use, simple. If you're after a lot of specific features this unit may not have them. If you just want to plug and play I'd recommend it.
I think I am going to go for one of the all-in-one pickup cover/ramp. I know a few of you have this on your CB basses. How do you like it in terms of aesthetics? I am thinking of doing purpleheart, as it seems to compliment the tulipwood's pinkish hues.

Might look good, although Cliff should be able to put the pieces together and see how well it looks. I couldn't imagine it not working well.
Purpleheart covers with exposed poles and a separate ramp would be my other consideration. I've tried to have some photoshop renderings done, but to no avail.
Finally, my bass is starting! I just saw the headstock cap in Cliff new's section....(Koa Top)
I didn't remember the waiting was that long, i've waited 14 months for my MTD 535 but this time it's only been 8 months yet and it seems like a century...
but i can't complain i've hesitate a lot between ordering a CB bass and a Bee bass. After looking at the Bee bass thread, i can tell 8 months waiting is nothing!!!
I really like the other headstock caps, i'm not a purpleheart fan normally but this 2 tone cap is Great looking!!!

One of the many reasons I chose Cliff was his clear, demonstrable timeline and build process. After going through shenanigans with my Bee bass I didn't want such a hassle again.
Yep, Cliff is the absolute man! He is true to his projected completion date; answers any and all questions with extreme patience; and delivers a truly amazing product.
I have also been burned in the past by a luthier who did not deliver on time; in fact, he has never delivered at all. No issues or drama with Mr. Bordwell. He's a class act.

That might look good. Not sure if he could do purpleheart pickup covers and a tulipwood ramp, although it's probably thin enough that it might need to be mounted to another wood for thickness.
