it might also be "stabilized"... even the light part looks kinda' dark. my birdseye board is also stabilized (tho not spalted)... he can order it that way from his vendor. not sure the exact process, but it's supposed to get rid of any of the potential for figured wood to warp or move due to the figure over the years.
It's Acrylic Impregnation, the wood is treated and then baked under pressure, I believe. The guy that does them only sells to Cliff and Alan of AC Guitars.
The process means you can use completely unsuitable woods, like spalts for fingerboards. Makes for some incredible looking instruments.

Ahhh… if it's stabilized, it's out for me. I'm keeping my builds under 7 pounds and the stabilized fretboards add too much weight. Despite that 2 of my next 3 builds have some stunning birdseye maple fretboards waiting. Just need a board for build 3.
