Well, after all the pondering and looking around, I ran over to the hobby shop and purchased styrene .5 mm strips and now after 3 hours work #196 is officially fretless. Final adjustments in process as they take days to fine tune the rod, saddle heights, pickups, nut... but even now it sounds nice and bloomy.

Not the 1st. Have had at least 6 from Squire, Fenders, Dean, Heartfield to Fbass over the years. ( I highly regret not still owning that fretless BNF6 F bass. ) Most I converted myself, so neither is it my 1st defret. To me it is very enjoyable work.

The custom body shape - I guess, using the Felicia / Ergo control 'bulge'. I really like it - thats why felicia is my fave s/c shape!

Yes, I like that, too. I don't think I'd like it on my own basses... but who knows?

I've got a couple bass needs (*rofl* ok, this is probably so not an accurate description)... I'd like a solid body 6-string to go with my heavily chambered Anne, and I would love a Darkstar-ed short scale "old-school" type bass. Something "retro". I'm still on my "no-buy-bass-for-2010" project, so it won't happen anytime soon. But maybe I'll put in an order for something cool on January 1st 2011.

But I was thinking, with all the retro-hype out there, would a Clement Retro be on a lot of people's wish list? Something with a Darkstar or similar pickup, short scale (30" or 30.5").... what shape should that be? Something to resemble the Jaguar? or the Ric? or what? :-)

My short-scale need evolves from the fact that my wife was gonna play my bass the other day for a family band project, but she has arthritis and cannot stretch her fingers enough, so a short-scale would be ideal for her. And I was thinking if I was gonna get one, might as well be filling one of my own voids in my collection.

Just thinking aloud here. I have a feeling our bass wizard isn't really into the retro type basses (unless you think the classic Jazz is a retro)... but we're allowed to daydream? :D

Liked: probably because of my early influences Geddy, Chris etc. And I learned alot about music while in my possession. Playability and sound (at the time) was the best I had to work with.

Disliked: sharp edges, dug into the thigh while sitting and forearm always.

Beware of the Rickolawyers, they are always on the lookout for anything that remotely resembles a Ric. :spit:

Personally, I never really liked the Rics much. But I guess it's a matter of personal preference. And I've heard the Ric-o-lawyers can be pretty zealous so better not go anywhere too close. :-) Ohhh... will I get sued for saying something like that about them???? :hiding:

But there are a lot of cool retro-basses... Duesenberg, Fender Jag, Danelectro, etc, etc... would be cool to investigate some oldies and see if it was possible to come up with something retro that would fit in the Clement list of body shapes. ;)

New body shape, Tom? hmmmm who knows? :D:D

Well i finally went and did it. I have had enough lurking on these threads and finally decided i had to have my own. After emailing Tom last night and exchanging a bunch of emails i am proud to say that i will be having #208 built, which is going to be :

7 string (tuned low f#-b-e-a-d-g-c)
Swamp ash Kim body style
black limba/wenge neck/flat radius wenge fretboard
18mm bridge spacing
Bartolini g6 style pickups
Bartolini 3 band pre
Black hardware

I can honestly say i havent been this excited in a LONG time. Tom really is a very easy person to do business with. Super quick to respond to emails and really helps out with designing instruments. Cant wait to see it come to life.

How do i get me a number?

Welcome Antares - I hope your Clement journey is as exciting and fun as mine was!

Mr Walker will probably drop on at some point and assign you a number.

Make sure you keep us updated with pics of the build - the regulars (like me) here like nothing more that gawping at Tom's creations!
