Yes they are. My favorite too Tom. I love those basses, they are really something special. I do miss the single coils in the fretted though, mainly the dynamic response.
Well, Willis has some good ideas about both instruments and music that works. I play with a floating thumb, and a ramp is very effective for this technique. Also makes you faster.
You are thinking about the Ibanez GWB, right? That bass has been an inspiration, but instead of going Japanese, I knew a guy in Florida who could do it like I wanted

Her colour has matured somewhat and is now a very dark blonde, almost brunette.
The pickup was changed too. Now Bartolini.
She used to have 2 knobs, now she has one knob and a switch which I gather is the coil selector.
She still plays as smooth as butter and sounds totally sweet.
I don't dig that cheapo plastic knob though. It will have to go for something more befitting of a handcrafted instrument.

Why the extra knob, you ask?
Not quite sure what preamp to use yet, I have a couple lying around here. But I might just keep it passive, and MAYBE put a varitone.
All you guys with yer 19mm spacing. 16.5 is where it's at, only because Hipshot has to custom make anything tighter. 
I'm about to get reeled in for a 3rd Clement I think. I love the Gary Willis inspired basses, I also got a ramp for my 16.5 / 6 fretless and with the nice and tight spacing, really helps with finger picking technique.

Agree about the spacing and the ramp! On #308 I have 17mm spacing. Feel that is tight enough. Also have a big ramp which will give good support for the thumb.

16.5mm spacing is fantastic on 5 & 6 string basses!

While I agree, I personally had a hard time switching back and four between my 16.5 spaced five strings and my 19 mm spaced fours. I found that I could played much faster and easily with the 16.5 but once I got used to it I would stumble on my four strings.
I mainly play four anymore and have a cheap 19mm spaced fiver. But I really, really miss my SR1005. Beat up but probably the best playing most comfortable bass I've ever owned.
