Club Fbass (Part 11!)

Here's a video of a group of friends and I covering Alain Caron's "Slam the Clown" at my master's recital. I'm playing my Alain Caron BN6LE through my Markbass rig with everything flat and the slap contour switch on. I'm not exactly happy with my solo, and there are moments where the band isn't together (the other musicians didn't have the music very long). Anywho, hope you enjoy!

Also, I love how the bass appears purple onstage!

Sounds pretty good to me! The bass comes through well for the informal setting and it does look purple!
I feel sorry for your keyboard player, small music stand or too much paper... Lol

Good job! I "liked" it!

I have #7 of 9 of these BN6LEs, and I've never seen mine look purple yet -- but Alains can, and this one does, doesn't it?

Great tone though, and great playing. I'd be happy if I played that solo!

BTW, I love how you guys set up the drummer to the side facing the band (instead of in the middle how bands always do), and how you plopped a monitor in front of him. Not only can he see the band better, but the crowd can see him -- including his legs -- and can better appreciate what he is playing I think.

Thanks Tom!

I found that it looks purple under certain light. It seems to look purple under "soft light" like stage lights and lights at home. But in sunlight it's blue as ever! Interestingly enough, the color of blue is the same (or close to) as that of Kansas University, and the shade of purple is the same as Kansas State University...so I've had numerous complements from people simply because the color matches that of a favorite team. :P

I'm listening to it now... so cool. I love music like this. What great job playing. I like how you were tapping with your left as you used your right to adjust knobs. More importantly, I love your right hand technique when it is on the bass. When I play a fretless, I find myself reverting irresistibly from my 3 finger 1 thumb style back to my two finger technique and I don't know why.

Interesting coincidence. One thing I really love about my BN6LE is the weight. That never mattered to me before, but it does now. Old age? I love playing a 6-string bass that sounds fantastic, looks great, and weighs less than some of my 5-string basses.

Thank you Tom for your kind comments.

I had the same reflex with my right hand, given that the ramps in the BNF6 are very close to the strings and the angle for the ring finger was a little close. I just turn my hand a little farther from the bass to allow all the fingers to move around.

The fretted bass is my old Yamaha TRB-6ii, a totally different beast... while the FBass requires 0 effort to sound and does not react well to strong playing (very gentle, very smooth) the Yammy loves pain and suffering, it reacts well to "muscular" playing.

Salut!! Great playing and the sound is super. Love your technique on both the F and Yamaha... I have more or less the same basses as you... My BNF6 and a Yamaha 6IIP... and you're right when you say that the Yamaha loves to be take a lot more rougher than the F.... Two completely different basses all together.... Continue posting your amazing videos.. Love them... Joyeux Noël à toi et ta famille d'un gars du Saguenay!!!!

Thank you for the right hand tip -- I'll give it another go.

I had two Yamaha 6ers, the Patitucci signature model. One was a lined fretless and the other fretted. For a long time the "twins" were the only basses I played.

When I got my BN5, my first Fbass, the band actually asked me to play it more because they preferred the tone -- which was a big shock to me. That led to me getting the BN6 (fretted).

The BN6 ruined my relationship with my Yamahas. Eventually I sold them on to a TBer who assured me he was a huge Patitcucci and Yamaha fan, then he sold them on in a month or so for a profit, making me regret the bargain I gave him.

Anyway, I still love the Yamahas, but the playability of the BNs made it really hard for me to go back and play them. Then again, I have a light touch overall.

Hey Club,
I haven't posted in a while but I've been checking in regularly just looking around.

Some of you may remember from a while back that I had an issue with the black pore fill on my BN6... There was a spot stretching accross the front (under the neck, pickups & bridge) that took on too much filler for my liking... After much debate and trying to live with it, I just couldn't... I LOVE everything about this bass except that. SO, I sanded off all the pore fill and resprayed natural clear satin... I will reassemble it this week and post new and old pics. I think the wood grain came alive with the pore fill out... I should've ordered it this way from the beginning!

Happy to still be in this club and looking forward to all the goodies at NAMM!

WOW! And I get nervous changing my strings and terrified adjusting my truss rod! Way to go!
