There was a spot stretching accross the front (under the neck, pickups & bridge) that took on too much filler for my liking... After much debate and trying to live with it, I just couldn't... I LOVE everything about this bass except that. SO, I sanded off all the pore fill and resprayed natural clear satin... I will reassemble it this week and post new and old pics. I think the wood grain came alive with the pore fill out... I should've ordered it this way from the beginning!

Happy to still be in this club and looking forward to all the goodies at NAMM!

Here is a before and after comparison... I should be able to finish it tonight... Everything is in I just have to wire it up and bolt the neck back on... And strings too of course.

I can't wait to have her back, priorities shifted right after I took her apart so it has taken much longer than expected.

Thanks Tom! She's already refinished... With a very thin coat of clear satin poly (no pore fill)... Just enough to protect the wood... I'm curious if I'm going to notice a difference in tone. If so, hopefully not too much since I loved how she sounded before... George said he liked what poly did to the tone... Brighter w/ a bit more compression... We shall hear.

Hopefully you made a good audio recording prior to the work for a baseline (not "bass line") to see if the tone changed. I do this sometimes when I change string brands, just to have an objective basis for comparison.

Anyway, what matters is how you look the look and tone when all is said and done.

Tom, really.....you are such a great FBass "force of nature"..you must come one year and experience the bass overload. :D

Laughing. Thanks a ton, Mitch, for the warm welcome, but "force of nature?" My wife would say it is "unnatural." :)

I am dying to go, but each year it always seems like I have some kind of conflict.

Here is the finished piece... But it was so late last night I didn't even tune her up or do a set up... That's for tonight.

I am very pleased with how it turned out... The one thing though is I took enough off the top to make the neck heel not flush with it... I will play it and figure out later is that is an issue (if my nail will snag it when popping the high C)... Even if so, it shouldn't be too difficult to remedy. I am sooooo glad to have her back! :hyper:

Thank you! Brave? Courage? Stupid might fit better, haha... I still can't believe I hacked into a perfectly wonderful 7-month old super instrument because of aesthetics... I guess for me it's all part of the package and experience in owning these things... I'm just extremely happy and relieved that it worked out well!

It was sprayed. One small but very important detail I forgot to add is that my good friend, Jimmy Coppolo of Alleva-Coppolo, sprayed this for me... In fact all the work was done at his shop... I sanded everything and he shot it.

And yes, I will post my thoughts on the tone and note any changes, if any.

Sorry for the newbie question, but I'm getting familiar with my BN5 and I'm comparing it to my other bass (Tobias).
The Tobias has quite a higher output volume than the fbass even in passive mode.
At least 30% louder.
No, there is no output level control inside the Bart preamp.

I come here to drool sometimes. Nice work. I take it you bought it used and thats why you did not just send it back?

I agree it needed something. I love that black grain filler on the natural. It is one of my dream basses.

This one was a new custom order for me with some slight differences from the standard F bass spec - mainly a bigger body and slightly different shape (upper horn) and pickup placement... There was no "just sending it back" because the bass turned out spectacular and there was technically nothing wrong with the work or finish - I'm just too picky. Shipping to and from plus the refin cost was not feasible. And it wouldn't have been fair for George, who is my friend, to eat any cost because I'm picky. Sanding was within my skill set so I went for it.

That's what I've been thinking too -- both the new look and the courage to take on the project. That's cool that Jimmy could help out with it.

I can't wait for your report when you get it setup and ready to play.
