Another thread (12!), thank you Tom for maintaining this alive, always animated and interesting exchange here. It has been a while since I posted a photo of this beast, here it goes:

Nope, mine is still available and the price has been dropped!

Good to see you back! Is that Tallbass's former VF5 by chance?

Regardless, I sure love that finish!

CLUB FBASS ROSTER (Part 3 of 3)...

Hey everyone!

Been a while sense I posted on this forum although I read it daily!

I just picked up this beast from David Hughes (Swedbass).

Its a 1996 F Bass BN6 with Flame maple fingerboard..the old school split coil pickups under soapbar covers and it has a Nordy pre-amp installed.

I also have the original Buffer pre amp the bass was originally installed with.

This bass is Amazing on sooo many levels. Plays like butter and sounds spectacular!

The Split coils do give the bass a little different vibe, more in the way of the Alain Caron bass. The Nordy pre really does sound great very transparent and clean like the Fbass Pre.

The controls are:

Volume/Volume/Tone
Bass/Mid/Treble
Active Passive switch
Mid Freq selector switch

I've played 5 gigs so far with her and it has flat out killed!

The bass has tons of Mojo.

I special shout out to David Hughes, not only is he a fantastic player, but a fantastic guy to work with. Hopefully some of Davids talent is engrained into the bass!

Here are a couple video's of David playing it. The 1st is with the Buffer Preamp and the 2nd is with the Nordy:

Very Blessed to have it!

Im on the hunt now for either an older BNF6 or older AC6 fretless, can have ware on it. Let me know if anyone is selling one:)

Pics!!

Salut! What king of degree do we need to attend the clinic?

So, yesterday Thor (previously owned by Tom) got to be in my hands after a phenomenal trip since it was born back in 2009.

It seems this instrument was originally made for the amazing Edmond Guilmore and on its trip to Israel it got damaged. The bass was sent back to fBass in Canada, where George and co. made a forensic repair to the neck that is almost invisible.

During this stay (I do not know if it was before or after the repair, the big Master had Thor in his hands), as per the photo below
Thor4c.jpg

Then it got to Donovan's hands, and he made a video with it, that appears here. I believe Donovan is/was in Missouri.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=logDpizacV0

Then in went to the incredibly caring hands of Tom, I wonder if he travel to/from Alaska/Utah, where it spent most of his days so far. Tom made various posts about this bass, and I believe it must been pretty hard to let this monster go. He was kind enough to sell Thor to me.

After looking at the photos and particular position of the pickups I thought I would benefit to install a ramp(s) on Thor. I play pretty close to the bridge sometimes, and the space between the bridge pickup and bridge is wider than most basses. I decided to ask George to put 2 ramps, one between pickups and the other against the bridge. For this, Thor went by truck from Utah to Hamilton, Ontario... back to Canada.

The most amazing thing... George had pieces of the original wood made for the top.... and built the ramps with matching wood, that follows the grain. This was too much. Below photos of Thor with its new ramps, and some details about the ramps.

Yesterday, it was delivered to me by George himself, he was coming to Montreal on a personal trip and was kind enough to bring Thor with him. Below, the creation, the creator, and the short/humble recipient of all this magic.

After playing a bit I thought I would swap the strings and try something different, it has DR Black Beauties on it at this moment, and it sounds absolutely great. My BNF6 will forever have fBass strings, but I guess this guy sounds very organic with this setup. I will see.

So... another chapter in the incredible story of the Amazing Thor. I will gig the heck out of it, so soon will be posting some videos with Thor singing its guts out.

Cheers,

, Donovan mentions me by name.

Anyway, I had a 4-string Fodera Yin Yang that I loved but never played. I loved it because I love Victor Wooten, but I never played it because I never play 4-strings anymore.

I listed the Yin Yang on TB and instantly had a ton of interest, a sure sign my price was too low. I ended up selling it to Jason, the founding partner of Fodera who told me he wanted it for his own collection, but I guess he changed his mind because just weeks later he sold it on for a profit.

No matter, I now could get Thor, a 6-string bass that I would actually play.

Time passed, and I decided to go all in with a right hand fingerstyle I had been dabbling with. Among other things, it requires my left hand to learn to do the string muting, just like I have to do when I am slapping. However, because I'm an old dog trying to learn a new trick, I have to commit to it, otherwise I don't keep my left hand habits and my play gets super sloppy.

Soon after I realized that for me, 28 frets are 4 too many. After a year or so of denial, I came to terms with the fact that Thor was a tough fit for me now, just as the Yin Yang was before.

Musing aloud about Thor here, I was surprised to get private messages from 4 people expressing interest.

That reality check made me doubt I wanted to part with Thor, but after some soul searching, and realizing what a BETTER home he would have, I agreed to sell him.

I don't know if anyone cared about all that, but at least it fills in some of the gaps of history for Thor.

By the way, those ramps are AMAZING! Great decision, and even greater work, Fbass! Wow.

DR Black Beauties? Wow, I never thought about them. I bet they do sound wonderful.

I knew about Thor since his inception almost. Edmond and I communicated when he ordered it, and he sent me photos when he first got the bass, as well as a couple of [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].

Likewise George kept me apprised of Thor and sent me a few photos as well. I think many of us were quite curious about a fretted AC6, including Alain Caron, as you can see in that photo. I believe it was taken before it was sent out to Edmond in Israel.

At the time I had saturated my wife's capacity for saying "Yes," to new basses, so I was sad I couldn't get a fretted AC6. In her defense, I do have enough and am probably too greedy when it comes to basses.

Imagine my surprise when Thor appeared on the Fbass site for sale. I begged and pleased with Mrs. Tom7, but the only Yes I could get was if I sold basses I wasn't playing.

That was fine by me, but I was scared someone would buy it before I could get basses sold.

Enter Donovan. He was interested in the bass too. 6 strings aren't his thing, but he was curious and wanted to own it at least for a little bit. I told him I was selling a Fodera so I could get Thor, so he bought Thor knowing I would be buying it from him as soon as I raised the money. It was a win/win for all involved. In this video demoing Thor, Donovan mentions me by name.

Great Stories of the "Travels of Thor"....but don't quote me on this but I think I might be the only other owner (second) to own a Fretted AC6!!...all I can tell you is that the Bass is unbelievable, George and the Team at FBass are unbelievable... Every time I play it ...it just keeps getting better and better... congrats wildwest!..below is pic of mine!.. I added the controls for you too
