I played an F bass couple months ago in London's Bass Gallery. I was in awe how good it is!
They really are great, aren't they.
I tell this story from time to time so forgive me, guys, if you've "heard it" before....
I used to think there was no point in life for 5-string basses. To me, the only things that made sense were 4-string basses and 6-string basses.
When I wanted a certain look or a certain tone, then you played a 4-string bass. When I wanted extended range, or to play runs and patterns "across" the neck rather than "up" the neck, then I played a 6-string bass.
But because Talkbass.com has this way of making you buy more and more stuff, hanging out here eventually made me believe I "needed" at least one 5-string bass.
Being in Alaska with no practical chance to try most brands before buying, I read a lot of reviews, lurked in forums and listened to clips and settled on an Fbass BN5. The deciding factors were a review by Bass Player Magazine and just how GORGEOUS this one TBer's BN5 was in photos.
My BN5 arrived and I took it to a gig and put it on a stand. I told the band it was a "back up," but really I just wanted to show it off.
However, halfway through the 2nd set (if memory serves) my 6-string bass died. Unable to get any sound from it at all I switched to my "back up."
At the next break I went to change the battery in my 6- when the band came up to me and asked me not to.
"Could you play the Fbass the rest of the night?" they asked, nervously.
I was so shocked. I asked why.
"Because it has an AMAZING tone and sounds so much better than your other basses," they answered.
This wasn't one person's opinion mind you, this was a committee of 5 very talented people whose opinion I really trust.
I was so preoccupied with worrying about what might be wrong with my 6-string bass I hadn't really paid attention to the Fbass. When we played again I got it.
My wife was at that gig too and she agreed, and next thing you know I'm emailing George to get a 6-string built.
