Club Fbass (thread 12)

So just got a Fbass BN6 in trade and it's a serious bass! Love it! I'm very surprised at how easy the 6 is to play!!!

My question is, I just paid for a full set up because there was a lot of buzzing going on. After the set up, the buzzing is better, but it's still there. Now this is my first 6 and I want to know if that's normal for such a large fretboard. The guy said there looks to be a slight twist in the neck too, but I couldn't see it. He's said that before too, and I couldn't see it (different bass). So did I get ripped on a set up or is there going to be some clank/buzz in a 6 no matter what?
Please post a photo so we can get you a club number! :hyper:

Okay, this is going to sound absurd to most of you, but I just realized it has been YEARS since I've played a bass without an amp.

When that dawned on me, I went through some of my 6-string Fbasses and played them unplugged. I wouldn't say mine buzz.

Friends,

one of you could compare the neck between a VF and BN ?
I start to think (gas ?! ) about a Fbass with an ash body and maple fingerboard.
I may go for a 6 strings.

Thanks !

Our BN necks are a slightly flattened V shape with no bulky shoulders. We found this to be the perfect carve for comfort, tone, and speed. The profile is thin/medium. Our VF necks are typically the same but they have just a little more shoulder mass and are more of a medium carve.

That being said, if you specify the neck profile thickness, we can custom carve it to your liking at no additional charge.

If you have any other questions feel free to email me at [email protected]

Congrats on your BN6 but sorry to hear you're experiencing some unplugged buzzing.

A few remedies for buzzing...

Neck Straightness:
One of the most important things is to ensure your neck is completely straight. To check, depress the first fret with your left hand and the last fret with your right hand pinky. With your right hand thumb, tap around the 12th-14th fret. There should be about 0.5-1mm of space between the bottom of the string and top of the fret wire. If there's more space you should tighten your truss rod about 1/8th of a turn at a time. If there's less then loosen your truss rod about 1/8th of a turn at a time.

String Height:
If your neck is perfectly straight and you're still experiencing buzzing, try raising the saddles a touch before resorting to a new nut.

Strings:
Check your current strings for dents and give your new strings some time to break in.

Good luck JWR!

You know what's weird is I only notice a buzz when I'm not playing on a amp. Must just be the strings breaking in. God this thing sounds great!!

You probably notice buzzing when the bass is unplugged because your plucking the strings harder to hear the notes. When the bass is plugged in you probably play with a lighter touch, because your not trying to hear it acoustically. I do the same thing. My $.02

Hey Marcel,

Gary Willis used to have a neat trick posted on his website--maybe he still does, I don't know. This is it: depress the string at the first fret with your left hand. Depress the string at the last fret with the inside of your right arm, just above the elbow (push all the strings down at once). This leaves your whole right hand free to check the relief at the mid point of the neck, have a beer, change the channel, sign autographs, etc.

Also: If you only get buzzes in certain spots it is probably a fret issue. If it buzzes the same all over, your neck may have a back bow or the saddles are simply too low.

Hello guys, I have an issue with my BN5. The red wire from the battery get cut:

Hi all,

I went ahead and put down a deposit today on a new BN5. Working with Donovan @ Fretspot, which was a choice influenced by all of the good things I've heard about his business. Got the following options:

Deposit for FBass BN5:

-5-string
-Right-handed
-No top
-Solid Solid Black with Satin Finish Sheen
-Black Hardware
-A-Style Bridge
-Volume Blend Wiring
-19mm spacing
-Maple Fingerboard

Looking forward to getting this around my 30th birthday in May. I'm a new bass player (less than a year), but want a bass I can "grow in". I do play at a church, so I'm trying to be the best player I can be, and also have a nice instrument.

That's going to be a real beauty! Can't wait to see a picture of the finished product.

I'll take some pics soon. The finish is really pretty. Imagine paying extra for paint? Yes, it's an up charge at FBass.
