With an ash body! Boy that's a sharp looking bass. Nice combo! I think if I had my druthers id try a maple board, alder body, 70's spacing. But between the two "standard" configs, I'm an ash maple 70's guy at heart.

Yes, George recommended the ash body with a rosewood board (and the Bad Ass II bridge) for my specific tone goals, and I love it! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

Heres a fun pic of the swap that's currently on between myself and Phillip Jordan. He was wanting a rosewood VF5 and I was wanting an ash maple VF, so it worked out well. 60's or 70's, pick your poison.... Which specs do you prefer?

Tough choice. I like the brown burst finish a great deal, it is a fresh twist on a timeless classic...

Any chance you can do clips of both playing the same lines while you have them together? :smug:

Hi everyone, who's the best F-bass dealer to order from (based on your personal experience)? I'm looking to get a custom BN5. Looks like I can order directly from the site, but the prices may be higher.

I cant comment on the price issue, but I have ordered all my FBASS's through George and Marcel direct...I highly recommend especially if you want a custom built bass.
but Im not taking anything away from any FBASS dealer...I just have not personally dealt with them purchasing a bass

Tom that is really a gorgeous VF5, the tobacco burst (or whatever it is) is just lovely.

Does anyone know the lineage of the upper horn changes on VF's? I gather that initially they were the longhorn with BN style neck joint and that at some point he switched over to the shorter horn/fender style neck joint. Does anyone know when that change happened? Are they all fender style (for lack of a better term) now or are they still producing some VF's with the longer horn? Thanks

I have had excellent experiences with Bass San Diego (a BN5 and an AC5). I think you can probably get a slightly better price by going that route rather than as a direct buy, but I'm not sure.

"Best" is a tough call. I've got basses from Glenn at Austin Bass Traders, Justin at Bass Exchange, Donovan at Fretspot, and of course direct from George and Marcel at Fbass and ALL of the experiences were great.

If I were to order a custom BN5 though, I think my first call would be either to Fbass or to Donovan at Fretspot.

Tom, what was your tone goal description that prompted george to reccomend rosewood/ash/60's?

First off, I am a fingerstyle player, and I play mostly over the neck pickup. I wanted something that would be full, but still have sufficient detail. After playing several VF5's at NAMM that year, I knew that I preferred the rosewood board, but I wanted tight lows, and a bit of growl. I was all set on alder/rw, but George thought that the ash body with a Bad Ass II bridge would work well for me, and I am so happy that he suggested this, because it certainly has. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

well..played the first ash neck F yesterday (BN5).

Sounded like a grand piano on the open strings...really defined and punchy/percussive, plus everything was super "clear". It had a maple board and brass piezo saddles ( although the piezo was shut off). It had lots of low end and I loved the whole tonal character.

One thing they did that I've not known anyone else doing yet is that they used Northern ash, not swamp for the neck.

I dont think it was a NAMM bass so unfortunately people wont be able to check it out there...thats why I wanted to post.

that's Great News Mitch

My custom BNF6 will be the first to have an ash through body neck ...Im totally excited about this Bass!!!
Hopefully you will get a chance to play it before it gets shipped out to me...George is going to start work on it when he gets back from NAMM

I am thinking about saling my Sadowsky NYC to buy a VF5.
Does any of you had played those two basses and could give his feeling ?

The point his I am looking for a "vintage" ash body/maple FB with the Fbass feel (low setting and growl)

I like my Sadowsky, but the neck is a bit fat and the action too classic (hight) for me.
Thanks !
