I don't know about the Vf5, but that took me at minimum 4 gigs to find the best setting with my Sadowsky. I wasn't able to get the tone I had in my practice room.

And of course my gig setting was bad in my practice room....
I guess that works for all basses....

Sort of related..?
I was recording some bass parts with my band the other day (eclectic Mr. Bungle-type silliness). For some tunes I had used my Nordstrand P/J active and VP5. We tried the VF5 for one song, and although it sounded amazing solo, the pitch definition seemed to get lost in the mix. We didn't have much time at that point, so I didn't experiment much with the controls. We ended up trying the blend somewhat to the neck pickup, with bass and treble controls boosted a bit. I was trying for an active P-bass kind of vibe. In the mix, it felt like the lows were too low, kind of below where you can really hear the pitch, more into the "feeling" the bass range. In the interest of saving time, we went back to the Nordy P/J, which filled out the low mids without the excessive extreme low end.

Now, this was the first time I have played the VF5 outside my practice room. On jazz-type basses I normally edge toward the bridge pickup and boost mids. That's how I play at home. This time I went with the "boost low and high" thing because so many people seem to like it. Maybe I should have gone with my instincts on that. But I have to say, I was disappointed that the bass didn't seem to cut through, since I would like to be able to use all the tones on the bass without getting lost in the mix. All equipment used was excellent, I believe I was going through a Neve channel and perhaps a high-end compressor.

I love the bass in my practice room, and plan to try it live etc. with a few different settings, but any advice would be helpful.

For the record, I owned a nyc Sadowsky, and never really got along with the "no mids" eq scheme. In that case also, the neck pickup just didn't seem to cut. Is it me???

Also, I feel the mid control on the VF5 really does add something, and doesn't get honky or boomy even when cranked.

Odin, of course, this is Thor's younger brother. Along with the AC6 i have a BNf6 and while I absolutely love the sound there are days that i miss a 10% of piezo sound into the mix, to bring a 'crystal' layer of sound above the infinite warmth the bass produces as it is. Think about it, just a suggestion. I wish you end as enchanted with your bnf6 as I was. I believe is the best instrument i have, ever had, will ever have.

WildWest

thank you for the suggestions...I know exactly what your talking about!...

I couldn't agree with you more regarding your sediments towards BNF's/AC's and FBASS!!!...Absolutely best Bass's "third stone from the Sun"!!LOL.

Best regards

What are the positive experiences that everyone's had with FretSpot? I always hear great things about buying a bass from him, and I know he's the top-selling F-bass dealer, but just wanted to know what sets him apart from other retailers.

What strings are you using?

fheliojr...
FBASS site has a build/information section on the VFP...
Big singles?....I know FBASS will build anything for you ...with any combination...but I believe the stock BN comes with FBASS pick ups!

But the best way to get your info...is to call Marcel...great guy...he will help you out with any questions you may have!

Big singles are Nordstrand pickups, the Aguilar DCB's might be an interesing option on BN models. Hard to top f bass pickups (and preamp for that matter) IMO, it's a big part of what makes an F sing.

I had the strangest jazz gig last night...it was a new venue for us...just a small bar, seats maybe 200 people...but the jazz scene was definitely new to the bar and the area...I've never seen so many rednecks drink so much and enjoy jazz...LMAO...also, must of had 20 people come up to me ask what kind of guitar I play..."that's the biggest guitar I've ever seen"...Me.."its a six string bass"... I still chuckle about this!!I wish I had pictures! This one will definitely go into the history books as one of the weirdest/wildest gigs Ive done!

Hey bro, I can't stand this weather any longer... And this is something I said back around end of January.... It can always be worst I guess.
Just to spice this forum a little bit, here i a early morning jam I recorded a couple of weeks ago; perhaps my early brain produced several tempo misses, but the bass looked and sounded so good that I thought about sharing. This is a fretted AC6, wearing Black beauties, little eq, recorded from a GoPro (you'll hear the acoustic sound of the strings)

Hope you like it
