As others have said I would go with a BN for a first F Bass. I have Fender PJ 5 and a friends Lull PJ as well as a couple of Sadowksy Js and I'd have to say the BN does a fine P & J tone. In fact my other basses event left the house since I got the BN5.
Having said that I'd love to have VFPJ in Daphne Blue but I really don't need it.
Yeah, as I've been researching/obsessively drooling over F Basses, a BN5 appeals to me more and more. This is based on Youtube (I've been trying to find a F Bass to try locally without success so far), but one of my concerns is some BN5s sound overly polite to me, while others are less so. This could be due to effects/the amp, but since I might not be able to try before I buy, I want to have decent confidence that I'll know what I'm getting.
Side questions: Does anyone find the slightly extended scale noticeable compared to a regular 34"? Also, it seems to me that F Basses tend to be on the slightly heavier side (closer to 10 than 9 pounds), is that an aberration of my research or is that accurate?
