Nice! One local TBer told me he uses his 421 for vocals these days. Definitely a nice piece of gear!

I'm not a fan of the vocal mics though.

I have an EV RE20 that I have carried around when I need a mic for 20 years. I've mic anything and everything with it: Cabs, acoutic guitars, Double bass, whatever I need to mic. It always sounds pretty good to my ear. If you can actually sing, vocals even sound OK on it. If you can't, you might want to stick with a 58.

I've had sound guys put $500 "whatever the latest and greatest is" on my cab for recording or live stuff. I think the RE20 works just as well. Might be all the mojo it has. It looks like I found it in a trash can.

The RE20 is a staple voice-over mic because it doesn't have the extream low end roll-off when pull away from it (like most other mics).
That's why it works so well for upright. Still captures the low end and it can be 2' away.
The 421 has a bit of that as well.

The D112 is a great all around kick/bass cab mic. Yeah a little scooped to my ears (FWIW), but it never sounds "bad".
Seems to always end up sounding good.

Ok, I need some help, please.

I have been futzing around with the setup on PJ5 for the last week and have an issue that I can't seem to fix.

I get this knocking sound when I play my A and E string. The string sounds out normally but I get this annoying knock just after plucking the string. I've had my relief setup go from fairly flat to kinda crazy lots o'relief. I've had the the string saddle on the bridge up and down and way up again.

So I checked out the setup section here on TB and found that they said that the relief was wrong, the strings were hitting the pickups and suggested that the playing technique was bad and needed to be corrected.

Anyone here have any ideas?

Happened to my Dingwall few days ago. I lowered the pups so that the knocking sound will be gone..

I think its the pups reaching the maximum heigh and not screwing on the bottom.. Could be a different situation for you though I share..

Hey Jerry;
that Sadowsky setup guide that's floating around had some suggested pickup heights listed. Get your setup how you like it to play/feel then, to the best of my recollection:
Neck 7-8/64
Bridge 5-6/65

This is measured depressing strings at the last fret, underside of string to top of pickup.

but, if you're still digging hard enough to smack the pups, there are about 3 choices left:
play softer,
pull more sideways so the strings are traveling up and down so much
lower the pups more.

Thanks guys! But I can clearly see that the strings aren't hitting the pickup.

Oh and just to note this happens whether I am fretting a string or it is open. I would try putting on the old E and A strings that I pulled off but I dumped those. There was no knock problem with the other strings other than they were dead.

Yes, I had the same identical issue w/ a new P/J 5. It was only on my A string. I thought maybe the nut was cut too low so I wrote to Lisa H. and she had me adjust the string retainer(?) on the headstock and put a little relief in the neck. (It was almost flat) I also had the action set very low so I raised it a small amount. This took care of my "knock" and the "feel" didn't change. Call or email the shop, someone will help you.

I've also spoken to Lisa, and she was totally wonderful to deal with, as well as being an amazing craftsman like the rest. That NYC 24-Fret 5 I had was mind-blowingly easy to play, and it was one of hers.

I was going to change the strings and see if another brand might help. But before I do that I'll take your suggestions. I did raise the action on the E and the A to where it is significantly higher than the other strings but no joy there.

One question, on the string retainer did you raise it or lower it?
