So I went back to the recording board and found better settings for the PJ5 in my Studio One software. Sounds a ton better than last weeks recording....except for the less than perfect note playing!

So I though I'd share (again) the bass track for On the Wings of Rock and Roll.

Sharing is so cool no matter where we think were at , it is all about the love , moment , progress , fun , the love for the bass , your doing a great job and playing a great bass that sounds sweet , what more could a kid ask for , Life is good !

Thanks guys. I know I'm not in your league and I do appreciate the encouragement. I broke down and bought the Yamaha HS80M studio monitors this past weekend only because I was able to score a discount of $75 off the pair. They came out to $312 ea - not bad. Now, I hear everything! OMG!

As far as skillz go, you've probably heard the CDBaby links in my sig by now. I ain't exactly a virtuoso, either. At Saturday's gig, some drunk came up and asked if it was hard to play the bass. I said 'not the way I play,' and went to get a drink.

I think that it's easy to get so wowed by guys like Gouché or Victor Wooten that we forget that it's okay to just hold it down without any fireworks.


I envy you your speakers. And the house to put them in. Once we have a place of our own, I may even get to play through my *amp*!

Hopefully fall of 2013. We'd like to start in Calgary or Edmonton, hit Banff and head west from there, through the Okanagan to Vancouver, then fly home out of Victoria. It's *really* questionable right now, though. There are a *lot* of ducks we have to line up in order to make it work.

Lots of work is right. I set up a 2 1/2 week tour to the Midwest for one of my groups and decided it was way better to be a bassist than an agent . Yours sounds like a beautiful trip. Contact me if I can be of local assist, (venue research, Sadowsky fix or whatever.)

Don't sell yourself short, and don't worry about skill levels around most of these good folks. We're all at different places in our musical journey, and if someone has issues with your skill or gear, their opinion probably isn't worth much to begin with.

I hosted a gtg a while back here in MI, and Ken (KJung) played my basses through my gear. I was ready to sell all my stuff and quit. ;-)
But the good folks opinions that matter, are never a judgmental one, or degrading one. They actually instill a good amount of confidence, and make you try even harder to get up to their chops.
Just my .02 ;-)

I went downtown tonight to see a promotional event of Gord Lightfoot & hear him talk of his career in music. I don't think I need to tell you how I love this guy.
I also had the pleasure of meeting up again with an old "soul mate" friend, Rick Haynes. Rick has been Gordo's bass player for about half a century. It was so great to have another little chat.
Roger, I don't know if I was able to sell him on a Sadowsky bass, but I gave it my best shot.

This. It's all great to be flashy but I have received many a compliment from fellow musicians, sound engineers, and audience members who prefer when the bass is solid, in the pocket, holding down the groove so that others can really shine. And I happen to enjoy that more than trying be flashy and attention getting, because then it's a community thing with the other players, and sure is good for the soul.

Bluesy, I listened to some of your recordings and agree with what other folks have said, you definitely have the skills needed to pull off a live gig! Once you get over the nerves the first few times, it starts to get fun!

I was thinking to myself, if I had to buy a 5 string version of any of my current basses for future work (I currenly only play 4 string instruments) - it would be a Sadowsky MV5 with Singles.

I cannot control how the guitarist mixes it altogether - twice, he's threatened to fire me as his bass player for telling him to turn it down so that it does not distort so much.

Kevin sent me this pic a few days ago and hopefully I'll be picking it up at the end of next week or the beginning of the following week... The neck has a Brazilian 21 fret board and matching headstock.. The color is a Copper Metallic that Pat Wilkens showed me while I was visiting his shop back in January.. It should also have a mint guard as well as the tort...

That bass looks awesome! Love the P body with the J pickups. Please post pics when it's finished.

There is a bunch of personal history involved with these guys for me with respect to my own "space in music". I won't bore you with an essay but when I reflect on it it's kind of impossible to digest the life experience these 2 musicians have shared. They are very close. (Their Guitarist Terry Clements passed away quite recently. Terry had been part of their close circle since forever also). Each time I've talked to Rick I can sense a weight of that life in the way he responds to inquiry. I have this desire to pry into it with him but can't seem to pull the trigger. There's only so far I feel comfortable reaching. It just seems too much of an invasion of privacy.
Maybe "next time".
A few years ago we did talk at length about the start of his relationship with Gord, early albums & how he influenced my bass playing sensibility. He's always been more or less a P guy & said he still has the early P that he recorded those 1st albums with. It's quite a trip to be in his company considering how far back he has been in my thoughts.

That's really pretty cool Blair. The overdub was spectacular, as always! I've never heard that tune.

I like this track. The bass tone is great. I hear what you mean about the guitar...it's has a overall kinda of Gary Moore vibe to it (check out this track/mix gary moore - still got the blues - YouTube), Gary seemed used to being LOUD in the mix. Clearly you're all very talented. My only criticism is that I found the reverb on the vocals a bit excessive and sort of distracting.
