Tell you what: ANY bass with Roger's name on it rules. Number of strings is somewhat irrelevant, IMO/E.
(Although, now that most clubs have banned smoking, the B does seem a little less useful) 8^)

I just came to terms that I'm a 4-String guy. I can play a 5 just as easy... but I feel more "at home" on a 4.
I also really don't go below E for what I play... if anything a D-Tuner at most.
I never got good tones out of the Low-B string above the 5th fret either, so the talk of "playing more in one position" never worked for me. Those notes sounded much more clear & defined played on the E string.
Now if I was in a hard rock band, 5-String all day... but funk/fusion/jazz... I just don't need it.

Do I need a five?, could I discuss real or percieved advantages or disadvantages?. probably not, but there are those nights when running up from that low B is like thumping your audience in the chest with a hundred pounds of soft chocolate!!!

I'd also like to add that so much of the club music out there now incorporates super-low frequencies. I like the idea that I can help the band compete with the DJ in the low-frequency department. Oh, and... nice:

I prefer to pelt my audience with actual chocolate...
I don't get many gigs but they don't leave hungry.

I work w/ 3 guys who actually still bring B-3's & Leslie's out.(no, they did not all die of hernia in the 60's and 70's) so I find it nice to have an option to shift registers up or down depending on their left hands. In reality though, NONE of my Sadowsky basses have ever had a problem cutting through.

a 4 string again was alot of fun. My gig situation changed and now I'm back to 4s only. Open D sounds better than fretted IMHO. Try playing King's X on a 5er!
With that said....I'm actually thinking of getting another 5er down the road. Which means both have a place and whatever works for the situation use it!
Now go to the Sadowsky site, buy a 4 banger and have them put a D-tuner on it. Tell them Joey sent ya!

I think the naked board (no position markers) works really well on this bass, and the way the flame matches the quilt? Fantastic.
Not a P-shaped body, but I own this bass, and it is a fabulous instrument. My only reservation is periodic curiosity as to what it would sound like with the j pickup in the '70's position, or with a Sadowsky soapbar in that slot.
