I would choose the single coil even not having played them. You want the Sadowsky sound, get the original recipe. Just my opinion.

I do believe the originals were hc's. And I think quite a few EMG's. But that may be due to their popularity at the time in thw early days.
To be honest, EMG's tied to the Sadowsky pre is a brutally good modern jazz sound.

Hmm, I've always wondered what a Spector w EMG's loaded with a Safowsky pre would sound like.

Actually, a PJ, and he's also apparently got a white Fender P with a rosewood board, tho the vid performance shots are all Sadowsky. :)

My impression is that most of the folks here who favour single coil pickups in their Sadowsky J basses are playing 4 stringers. Does anyone here play a Standard 5 J with singles? My next Jazz is supposed to be delivered with HCs but I've always been curious about singles.

I have a NYC standard 5 with HC, and a NYC Vintage 5 with single coils. For my single coils I opted to get a Braz rosewood FB to get a somewhat warmer tone knowing that SC have some serious bite. I could not be happier. Also my SC coil is an ultra light but solid body bass, I went solid since I wanted it in natural finish. The NYC standard is a routed body. I think you will be very happy with your HC. I like em both and can't see either bass going anywhere anytime soon.

I have HCs in my ash/maple Standard 4. That bass already has a lot of "bite" so I have a feeling the SCs wouldn't work as well with that bass - but I'm still curious. The 5 I have on order will have a rosewood board and will also be solid (non-routed). :)

I prefer HC for the 4 stringers, SC in the 5ers. Most folks here have singles in their JJ 5s.

I remember reading something like Jason interviewed Bryan and he was telling him that Sadowskys were the only waterproof bass he found because he sweats alot. He told Bryan he should get one or something like that?

I personally prefer the "little more bite, and little more mids" of the single coils versus the slightly more polite HC's, in the 5 strings I've had.
Different people hear things differently though, and, many folks like the HC's...personal decision that, not "what's right or wrong."

ME!!

The natural one I still love best (#4098), the orange bomber I got from Ken and have since flipped to Modern Growl, my current NYC 24 Fret vintage 5 string, as well as the Metro version of itself it replaced. All singles, all ash/maple, and all insanely good.
