Club Sadowsky!!!

I'm curious about what the sound would be like if I replaced the SCs on the Standard J I have on order with the Sadowsky soapbars. My main basses right now are MTD 535s and I love them but I don't need my Sadowsky to sound like an MTD. Would those pickups take me much closer to an MTD type sound or would they still sound, more or less like a Jazz but with a bit more "modern" full-rangedness? would it just sound "like a J but bigger and fatter"? Anyone have any ideas?

I don't think you'd have to worry about approaching MTD territory and that a bigger and fatter J is exactly what you'd be running into.

Edit: Let me say that I've never owned or gigged an MTD but have gotten to play a few. I just don't see the Sadowsky electronics lending themselves to the sound of an MTD regardless of configuration.

Mikes design has two different pickup locations as well as a very unique voice via it's electronics. If you compare other soapbar equipped basses, such as Roscoe, Lakland, etc even those that have Barts, they won't be much closer.

OK, I'm getting a little slower as I get older. I see that Roger seems to have gone away from neck plates in favor of the separate bushings. Maybe that was previously discussed, but I must have missed it. Of course, he surely had good reasons. I'm curious whether there are any trade-offs or is this just basically an improvement?

Most of Sadowsky Guitars design changes are discussed [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (scroll down about 4/5ths for the neck-plate change)

Roger's gone into additional detail in many TB threads, for example this one, among others.

I see the announcement in the first link. The second is to a thread on various pup designs. No, I have not seen any discussions about the move away from the heel plate +/-.

We have eliminated the neck plate on all of our instruments. We have increased the edge radius around the heel of the body and contoured the treble cutaway for a more comfortable feel in the upper register.

The only Sadowsky strings I use these days are their SS Blues, and I have had a very few occasions where the (tapered) B string was "sprung" (really heavy overtones), but I don't recall having anything dead out of the package.

Other than that, I'm really digging them a lot, and even very happily use them on other basses too.

I was out in the bush this weekend, dealing with the results of a bear taking up residence in our hunt camp, so I:

1) Missed out on seeing bass12's originals band; and
2) Missed this convo. One thing that I'll say is that, due to the fact that my tummy is rounder than it should be, the neck plate on my Fender can irritate my skin after a long night of playing unless I change the bass's position often. I personally prefer the no-plate way of doing it.
