On my 68-72 FrankenJazz, (which I believe uses the 60's positions) the pickup positions are:
  • Neck Pickup - 28" from nut, 6.25" from bridge
  • Bridge Pickup - 31.5" from nut, 2.75" from bridge

On the Sadowsky M245 the pickup positions are exactly the same:
  • Neck Pickup - 28" from nut, 6.25" from bridge
  • Bridge Pickup - 31.5" from nut, 2.75" from bridge

It's hard to find absolute measurements on the Web, but given that "The Fender Bass - an Illustrated History" shows that 3.6" distance between pickups is the 60's layout, I would say that this bass has the 60's layout.

Oh, and that's what it said on the Sadowsky order too. :) (Although to be honest once we had the high-level design elements in place I didn't sweat the details too painstakingly, figuring Roger knows what he's doing on all the finer points!)

Here are some impressions from playing out with this last night. One of the first impressions I had was how incredibly alive the bass is. In fact, during the first song I played live with it, I noticed some "mwah" type tones (normally associated with a fretless) emanating from my fingers. As I was playing, I was thinking "Hey, how did I do that?!?"

Tone on this: VTC open, no boost anywhere, pickup pan to neck pickup about 10%

I don't know how useful these tracks are to hear this bass in isolation. It was recorded in a cavernous space on a Tascam DR08, set about 8 feet high and 20 feet from the band. All stage volume, no FOH support for instruments.

I was functioning as the house bass player for a local blues jam so it was the typical barely controlled chaos, and at times i just backed off on the tone and played as simply as I could to keep from hurting myself or others :help:.

Another bass player sitting about 40 feet back said that there was tons of beefy fundamentals coming his way.

The amp was a Genz Benz ShuttleMax 12.0, FET channel, set flat, gain to a minimum, so clean as possible. This runs into a GB 1288T-UQ (aka QUAD) on top of a GB 115T-UB.

My sense was that the particular combination of components in this bass is sort of like a spirited thoroughbred. I was actually worried she might get away from me :eek:

I played a fair portion of the night in passive mode. It was still a a very rich and detailed sound.

I still have lots to learn about the VTC, as well as this bass in general.

Got tons of compliments on tone at the end of the night.:bassist:
