Well here's a little church playing for you. It's my MV4 Metro thru a Demeter Compressor into a Radial JDI direct. I love the tone. The band comes in at about the 30 second mark.

Steve, listen to that bass line again... no offense, but it's absolutely key to that song IMHO, and it's different than what you're playing.

Vic, we tried it both ways in practice and since we were a couple of synths short, the band leader liked it better with my extra note. Da-da Da, instead of da daaa. It's the tone and feel I wanted to get some feedback on. I ran thru a Demeter compulator into a JDI to the board.
Extra synth's not really needed... I've played this song a lot... including to huge fans who knew the whole dance and everything... and it's more than just a matter of an extra note. Well maybe the band leader critics will like this one better.
This is an original song from Ben West (Glee MD, "Try" Pink) whose a pretty good writer from the D. The Bass line is my own, simple, for a simple song.
Just for kicks I watched the whole 13+ minute video today. Man, that honestly has to be one of the very best, if not the best, music video ever made. It's got everything from great special effects for its time, great production, great dancing, great music, a full story line, great casting, etc. Wow.

I have to agree here. I mean, it was nicely executed and all, and the singer did a VERY good job IMO, but ... yeah.
The whole arrangement is different. Picking on the bass part which is simply supporting the rest of the arrangement is a bit off target, IMO. Don't care for the arrangement vs original? Cool I can understand that. The problem with this kind of tune is if you are going to change anything, it really needs a whole different spin. IMO. Otherwise everyone treats it critically like the NYPhilharmonic performing Beethoven's 5th. IMO.
Well, we were going to have a 24 bar interlude with dancing. But our dancing talent was taped out from the week before (easter). I volunteered to do 24 bars of moonwalking but that didn't go over well.
So the whole arrangement changed. I still think it's a pretty good job on the fly (and yes I know I was rushin and dragin on the last hits on the out). The other thing that made it tough was the lighting, I was in the dark the whole time, so there was no on stage communication except the floor monitors.

FWIW, I don't mean to sound overly critical. You may not know this, but Steve is a good friend of mine. And at least IMHO, the song didn't really diverge enough from the original to give me the sense they were really working specifically to respin it.
Again, no biggie, just FWIW. Steve's a buddy.
I'm not sure how much he was really involved with composition, but definitely, the people who were, whether he was involved or not, very clearly knew how to write incredibly popular and well crafted pop music. There's a good reason he was called the king of pop. Wow... he may have ended up as kind of a freak of nature, especially as time went on... more of a "product" than a "person" (sadly), but definitely one of the best, if not the best, at the game. I still listen to his MUCH older stuff as well, and you talk about GROOVE! Holy cow. There's a groove lesson in every single song... especially for rhythm section folks like us... even if it's a synth bass part.
