+1 I don't think this has anything to do with the Seymours or Nordstrand pickups. Of course, if you turn the bridge pickup off, you will get that 'pseudo P' sort of tone like you get on virtually any two pickup bass using only the neck pickup.
I personally hate that particular tone myself... woofy and non-articulate.. but that's just pure personal taste there. I think what Vic and I are talking about is the fact that you can't really dial out the low mid puch any other way than turning off that bridge pickup. This has much more to do with the pickup placement of the M-24 than the brand of pickup IMO.
There is no way to get a nice, balanced, even J-Type tone (or even a more traditional 2 pickup soapbar tone) with the M-24 IMO. Of course, that's not what that bass is about, and as Tom posted, if you are looking for a modern tone that sits above the bass drum and just 'chest punches' like crazy, this bass would be for you!
IMHO, even on the neck only, it's still there... especially compared to a J style Sadowsky with the neck pickup solo'd... in a big way. IME, at least.

Further, I find that, even if I add bass EQ, the low end is still MUCH "tighter" than a J style bass, and I've specifically sat down with my MV5 and 24F and explored this. Again, IME at least.

It's not a big difference on that particular bass. I'll have to weigh it, but as I recall, comparing it to Vic's 24F 5, the difference was not all that huge (though you did notice a weight difference).

What outboard are you running in this photo? I can see what you're doing (and it's clever). I can make out the Distressor and the Fasto Jr., but not much else in the rack.

sweet top!!! looks like its gonna be crazy nice. huge fan of crossing flame patterns on a top. my sunburst LP is like that.
honestly, i'm not sure. i'm not as much of an engineer guy yet to know the gear. then again, my wallet is sorta glad, cause knowing me... haha. but i do know there's neve dual channel strip rebuild in one of the other racks.
funny thing is, i remember when we tracked it, our engineer thought the sound was too smooth and soft, but oh man, was like bathing in caramel and marshmallow. so, we ended up going his usual route of just sadowsky into u5 DI into one of the neve channels, and also mic'ing up my sa200/sa410 setup, and DANG NABBIT that sounded huge. nice texture from the mic, w/ the sadowsky being massaged by the neve is something i recommend to anybody!
