On the super-P topic. If you can have either reverse P or regular P in one pickup, I would assume you could also do the two bass coils, or two treble coils. I've always wanted a bass with the sound of the bass coil of a PJ across all strings (on a 5 BTW, is there a 5 string super P?

Please remember that all of these pickups are designed for the more normal 4 string spacing which is 19mm (¾") at the bridge. Our 5 string spacing is on the wide side as well, at 19mm. Also, we do not do even string to string spacing at the nut. Our nut is cut so the "spaces" between the strings will be the same, not the distance from center to center on the strings themselves. We allow a little more clearance on the G string from the edge of the fingerboard, to prevent slipping off the edge from bends and pull offs. We also push the limits on our humcancelling 5 string J pickups in terms of how wide we can get the pole pieces to the end of the pickup cover. So factor all of this together and perfect visual alignment with the pole pieces and fingerboard dots become impossible. However, as has been addressed earlier, none of this has any effect on the response of the strings to the pickups.

I could switch to solid covers, but then it becomes difficult to radius the pole pieces as we do for more even tonal response.

On EVERY P/J 4 I’ve seen, whether online or in-person, moving the treble coil slightly “outward” would center the strings. Why not nudge the route over a bit?

Music-Man Inspired 5 (thanks to Fuzzbass for inspiring me)

  • P body in olympic white, unchambered ash
  • 21-frets, Amazon Rosewood, WITH white blocks
  • Nordstrand MusicMan pickup
  • Regular pre with VTC
  • Bernard Edward woodshed sessions in advance of said bass

Just keep in mind that the last two basses Bernard owned were Sadowsky J basses! :-)

Why unchambered?
And, going with a Tort pick guard?

You are hitting very close to what I have been scheming/dreaming - Music man style pu in the rear, P or super P for the neck PU, P body with J neck, 5 string, Olympic White with Tort Pick guard, and If I have the extra $$$ a rosewood fretboard with the CITES duty to get it to me in Canada. Otherwise Morado fret board.

Well, first off ...
I anticipated your Musicmandowsky lust and left the tor guard look to you sir. My 'flair' is the white blocks.
I have a preference for the solid, heavier body. Just a smidge more weight on the low end that is, IMO/IME, a bit tighter on the last 4 notes of the low B. More authority whereas the unchambered Sadowski (plural) I have owned had more vibrato up high and a generally-more expressive tone.

VERY subtle things that Drunky McMillertime in the back of the room would never notice.

Fuzzbass. Blame Fuzzbass. Just a short clip of his and I knew that I had to come to terms.
