Club Sadowsky!!!

Question, Sadowsky experts. I love my Metro and there is no doubt in my mind that Ash-maple Sadowsky is my tone ticket. I'm thinking about a used NYC, my Metro is well north of 10 pounds. Anyway I love the neck profile on Sadowsky fivers, but has anyone here made the jump from a standard Sadowsky to the Will Lee and if so how much trouble was it adjusting to the narrower profile at the nut? And is the thickness of the neck similar? I've played Will Lee fours and frankly the neck is a bit of a toothpick to me.

I can address your question, prolly. The first Sadowskys I owned were Metro vintage fivers. I picked up a Metro WL fiver, and found it more comfortable down in the first five frets because of the narrower nut width. (I've since added two NYC WL 5s, and sold off the vintage models.)

Yeah, I suspect a four string would seem too small. Well, just like my beat-up '62 Fender J feels too small down in first position.

Can't say I perceived any other difference in the feel of the neck.

I could be wrong; but, I doubt you would have much trouble with the narrower WL5 nut width. It’s only 1/8” narrower than the regulation 1 7/8” you are used to. IME, it’s one of those refinements you notice, but doesn’t make a whole lot of difference.

The necks on the 4’s are a whole different animal. My NYC 4 has that WL4 neck calibration; and “toothpick” is not a bad analogy. Roger took that calibration from the early Fender Jazz. My NYC has perhaps the finest Jazz Bass neck I’ve ever played, feeling really similar to my ‘62, but upgraded.

Mainly due to the 19mm spacing on the 5’s, they don’t feel anything like that; and have much more of a P vibe about them, even with the 1 3/4” nut. YMMV

This top was tinted with a colored lacquer to make it more blue/green. We usually just do a natural finish on buckeye.

... I just know I should have been listening when the rules were discussed, but I was working on my acceptance speech for 'Class Clown'.
