I've had a few (ok, a lot) of Rogers basses over the years, and I've shared some photos on this web site...

But, this one is extraordinary... It's a SN in the 1000's, born in 1991. Ebony fingerboard, weighs less than 9 lbs and is not chambered. I replaced the original PUPs and PreAmp (was sort of a prototype at that point) with Nordy Big Splits and the latest Sadowsky preamp. Best playing bass I've ever had.

BTW, I had some conversations with Roger about refinishing this bass, and making some other mods... He talked me out of it. And, he was right on. This is an awesome bass, just the way it is...

my favorite combos are ash/maple, ash/ebony, but I also very much like alder/rosewood, and morado boards with either ash or alder bodies.

Could anyone describe the difference in feel between 1.75 and 1.875 nut width on a Sadowsky 5 string?

Depending on your preference it could be faster, or cramped, or maybe just "different".

My alder/ebony MM-style does sound amazing. Also love my alder/Brazilian P5. My #1 is still my alder/maple P5, the 1st NYC I bought, but variety is the spice so I'm thrilled to have all three.

You see no ash above. I just haven't bonded with ash bodied basses: not an ash/maple Fender 57RI, not an ash/rosewood Lull P5, not even the gorgeous ash/maple NYC P5 I owned for awhile.

I have an NYC J5 with HCs and a J4 with SCs, both with alder/ebony.
Mainly 'cos I like a very dark-looking board.
My ears can't really tell the difference between ebony or rosewood and the descriptions I've read don't really resonate that well.
Forget maple, too bright.
'Attach & punch' v 'sweet & warm'.
If I put down an alder/ rosewood Fender Jazz and pick up my alder/ebony NYC J4 my ears are missing something.
Probably like wine and I'm missing the chocolate undertone with a hint of vanilla.
Anyone care to assist please?

These two comments seem to be contradictory, unless it's got nothing to do with the woods and everything to do with the different instruments?

Anyway, FWIW, I think ebony tends to be less full in the mids vs rosewood, but have a bit more snap up top, and maybe a little more compression. If the diff you describe has anything to do with the woods, I imagine it's the difference in the mid profile. Rosewood is going to be a bit fuller/warmer, less modern sounding.

IMHO anyway.

I’ll be taking this guy to the gig tonight. First 5 string I’ve owned in about 15 years. If you hear any wrong notes, it’s probably me.

In the second picture both basses are Metro Trans White. The 5 is a 2015 and the MV4 is 2018.
