Club Sadowsky!!!

Interesting to see some gnawing on Morado amidst its plentiful admirers and proponents. It's typical TalkBass tug of war, whole grain v pumpernickel.

Meanwhile, two accomplished, exemplary bass connoisseurs obviously value the tonal and visual aesthetics of Morado. Roger Sadowsky and Ken Smith both choose/chose Morado as one of their staple build woods, staking their artistry, livelihoods, and reputations on it. Apparently, they've made the wrong choice all of these years?

I've played some amazing basses from both Sadowsky and Smith. Morado was the fingerboard of choice in all of them. My experience with Morado is that it is beautiful in sound and appearance, durable, and readily available.

Potato, potato, whatever Morado. Play what you like, don't scoff
: )

Add Stuart Spector to the Morado list...

...I had no idea (and should've 'done a search') that the roasted maple was warmer/lacked the 'ping' of normal maple...
i was also surprised to learn this! i've never played one personally, but in spec'ing a bass recently i was told, so i said "naaaahhh" and stuck with what i know works. still, it looks cool and i like the enhanced stability, but i don't think i could be happy with the tone.

What it lacks in snap, it makes up for in a singing, even across the fretboard tone. It still has plenty of slap zing when the treble is goosed quite a bit, it’s just for me, when I have an ash/maple J5 in my stable, I wanna ‘have it and not need it’.

Similarly, my heavy braz rw/ash PJ5 has YUGE tone set flat, and I know I can achieve 808/Moog level thickness with very little effort

Exactly. I'm running into the same thing with the roasted-maple neck, soapbar-equipped in J position NYC I picked up on a trade.

I had no idea (and should've 'done a search') that the roasted maple was warmer/lacked the 'ping' of normal maple.
I don’t doubt that particular bass may not be doing what you want. But, are you 100% sure the “lack of ping” is entirely related to the heat treated maple neck? That just seems a bit odd. The heat treatment should make the wood both stiffer and have less damping. Neither of those changes in material properties should reduce “ping.”

Of course, the ears are the final judge. But, that conclusion just sounds unexpected. Could the soaps be part of that response?

Edit: I just realized that what you are calling “ping” may be due to the natural compression that the non-heat treated neck would have. The heat treated necks should be much more open, especially higher overtones; which could cause what Roger calls “warmer,” but could also eliminate some of the sense of compressed snap. ??? Anyhow, these terms are somewhat subjective.

I have a roasted maple neck on my NYC, and that bass is ALIVE. ZERO lack of high end response. But, it is also the first chambered Sadowsky I have played; and that is huge factor.

It has noticeably less upper treble extension than the multiple ash/maple Sadowsky basses I've owned.

One thing to note, to your point ...

It does have Soapbars in the J-Position. If I had single coil, 'normal' J's in there, with every other variable in place including the roasted maple neck, it might be a different story.

I don't know if the soap bars in here are the same as what comes in the M5/Modern/More Ken Smith pickup position basses I've owned, but those ash/maple variants I've owned had a TON of hi-end.

Again, this bass can get there, IF I almost boost the treble knob all the way ... and add some more on the amp. It's all subtle, but I know what will and will not cut through the mix/please me on stage at this point. Interestingly, my unchambered/ash braz RW PJ5 with CHROME FLATS is more 'zingy' up high than this bass. by the way ....

No longer available - Sadowsky NYC Vintage 5-24

Also, I've neglected to mention it's roasted Birdseye maple. As a rosewood fanboy, I'm out of my depth. Does Birdseye maple add to this conundrum?

This hurts to type ...

ElMon makes himself look like a jack wagon time, but for the good of the group ... for truth, justice and the American way ...

I'm an idiot.

My normal reference rig for everything is as follows:

  • Khan Audio Tube DI (great tube DI, like the SVTDI) ... into
  • Aguilar AG700 (no lacking for highs here. I run it flat with 'deep' and 'bright' boosted)
  • Aguilar SL112 with tweeter up a bit.

(pulls crow out of oven, liberally applies some Louisiana hot sauce, ices his keister towards future butt hurt, and begins to type)

I forgot that I was messing around with my 4ohm Euphonic Auio Wizzy 110 with my upright.

So ...

This cab has a true hi-fi, studio-monitor like quality to it, but since it does NOT have that 'slice your ear off' horn in it that I like when I'm doing the slap thing, there's going to be a more muted upper treble response.

(ElMon finds a way to save face, whilst still maintaining intellectual honesty):

But ... I still here a slight ... as in 'you probably wouldn't notice Vic and everyone else' roll off as compared to regular maple. But to @bucephylus you're right. This thing has the 'Poppins and the snapping' that I need up high.

Had I run this bass live (Covid done put a damper on my gigs. Wonder if anyone else is having this issue) into my Epifani UL410, I bet I would've been making the 'O' face all night.

Sincere apologies.

Hope this is a lesson about 'signal chain/aural subjectivity/look down at your dang speaker there brosephine'.

So @Vic: order away.

First, you immediately do NOT qualify for “idiot.” You gig a Sadowsky. QED.

Second, new basses can take some time to shake out; especially the really good ones. Patience and persistence. Does sound like you have an OUTSTANDING signal chain. Enjoy the journey, one way or the other.

Thanks. Good lesson on my end. I've learned it more than a few times.

Get rid of a dark sounding bass because you had a darker amp, but that newer bright amp you picked up after you got rid of the dark sounding bass would have complimented it perfectly and you'd have had 'your thing'.

This bass is my 'floater' bass. The one I allow myself to trade up/down depending. Might still sell it towards getting ahold of a similar instrument:

WL5 with Soaps, similar to the config I have, but 22 frets.
Ash body (chambered, but I'm learning to like that with a more 'modern, cover NeoSoul/Modern R&B' bass)
Brazilian RW fretboard. Never run into the women except in passing, but I can at least have the fingerboard.

I'll remember to have a tweeter on my dang cab before posting. For the record, the amount of Low B abuse at higher volumes that little EA 110 can take (I have a 5-string URB) is nothing to sneeze at.

Almost bought this the last time it was on sale ... and obviously it was meant to be:

Japanese: Low B is great, very tight, lika all Sadowsky basses. Chinese Metro Express: are not on the market yet. Expected end of june.
MetroExpress delivery is delayed for at least another 12 weeks because of corona. So first ones will probably appear in september. I got his notification from Warwick. I cancelled my order because I needed this bass for a project in july. Already found a replacement: a used 2008 Lakland Skyline Darryl Jones with an East J-retro preamp that sounds really great.
