When you listen back to that Sadowsky clip, are you saying that's what yours sounds like on the gig? If so, that explains a lot in your preference for alder/RW basses, since that clip sounds VERY much like my alder/RW Sadowsky. Maybe your ash/maple is an unusual one.

Ah... Tom and Peter... good call. Like an idiot, I missed that. Yes, dialing back the passive tone controls would remove much of the complexity in the upper register that, to me, really differentiates individual instruments.

What was the old Saturday Night Live thing.... 'never mind' :eek::D

And again, to me the clips sound great, just a bit different than the classic ash/maple Sadowsky tone with either no VTC or the VTC wide open.

No it didn't. My clips were me on my computer using an OLD wave editor and the LaME mp3 encoder. The tracks I posted were an export from ProTools on a Mac Pro and a bunch of expensive outboard gear.

No. My gig tone is generally brighter, and probably more revealing to tonal diffs. I just wanted to keep these somewhat on even ground. I realized after I laid the Sadowsky down I'd rolled off the VTC for the band tracks, and didn't want to take time to redo it. I had to get going. This was a real rush/rush job. Remember, I posted that I was backing the VTC off on both these. Obviously, that affects the results, and maybe even puts them on more even terms. That's why I pointed that detail out. :smug:

Anyway, all the previous stuff said, just to make it clear, these were never intended to be "reference" clips. Not by a damn sight. :)

This was a rush rush thing just for kix. If someone guessed "backwards" don't worry about it.

All that said tho, I still did hear the ash/maple thing coming through on the Sadowsky. Maybe not as pronounced as if I didn't have the VTC rolled off, but I definitely heard it.

Well this brings up an interesting point for all of us. I tend to use VTC all the way on. I may roll off 10-15% to round out my tone for a more mellow tune, in some cases I may prefer to rolloff a little bridge pickup instead depends on what I'm going for. If a balad type tune pops up I may roll the tone off entirely and even dial out some rear pickup and maybe even play with my thumb and a palm mute style.

Another reason I don't like volume/blend or stacked knobs!

Here's some live Sadowsky action.
Ash with rosewood NYC5, single coils, VTC back about 15%. Bass boosted about 10%. Pick-ups paned dead nuts center.
Amp was for stage monitor- bass direct into a Demeter Tube DI.


BTW, the girl singing back-grounds is Amy Cremen from last season's Biggest Loser.

HA!!!:D Yeah, it's a little high I guess!!

More so than just posting the vids is the tone factor.
With the talk of ash/maple or alder/rosewood, I thought I would toss in a ash/rosewood for comparison.
And then a little grindy pic action too! LOL!!!

The clip of the ash/rosewood IMO shows that combo in a band context- from highs to lows.
Granted it's a youtube clip, but it still has pretty good sound quality.

Bass2 is the Sadowsky. I also prefer that one over the F Bass, and I do hear more of the low treble high mids in that one over the F Bass, which sounds "sweeter" to my ear... tho not by a ton.

I didn't want to say anything 'cause I couldn't tell the difference. They both sounded so similar. I couldn't tell or even guess for that matter. :hmm: :rollno:
Okay, I went abck and listened played them a ton louder then I could hear the brighter tone of the Sad.
