Killer, my Metro gives me all the Fender vibe I could want and then some. I love the traditional sound but want that clean articulate tone that the Modern's do so well. I heard the Modern's described as Sadowsky's take on a Ken Smith, and I think that sums it up nicely.

I've always preferred no pop-up- battery. To me the Bass looks cleaner even though it's the back of the Bass. When I first got a Sadowsky I thought that it would be more convenient to have the pop-up but It just takes away from the beauty of the Bass.
I've never been in a situation with my Sadowsky's or any other bass where I had to change the batt during or after a set. I probably change my batts way too often. When ever I do a session with my main Sadowsky I change the batt just for peace of mind even if I changed it 2 weeks before. Sometimes engineers get a buzz or hum from a source other that my Bass and they always ask if it's a fresh batt.

Rob, granted, I don't understand how endorsement deals work, but is it standard practice to try and sell off the basses that you endorse on a public forum such as TB? From your example, I'm guessing that there aren't rules for endorsing artists and their conduct...like how many so-called "endorsing artists" don't actually use said branded gear on stage or in the studio? I guess I'm just wondering how it works.

There are a lot of posts on this, but it's kind of hard to find them using the search function.

Very briefly, the Sadowsky single coils (a version of the Seymour Duncan single coils) are a bit tighter in the low end, much more mid present, and have a more 'Fender' type upper mid lower treble growl than the deeper, wider, sizzlier and a bit scooped Sadowsky HC pickups (based on the Dimarzio Ultra J pickups). The optional Nordstrand singles are a bit warmer, smoother and darker than the Sadowsky singles INMO and IME.

I LOVE the Sadowsky single coils in Roger's ash/maple J's. They really warm those basses up, and give you a very nice, aggressive growl and grind. They sound MUCH better in passive mode than the HC's also. With my particular tone goals, I prefer the HC's in the alder/RW basses, since the wider, deeper, and more upper treble present voicing of those pickups balances the smoother, slightly darker voicing of that wood combination. I again prefer the singles in the ash/maple models, since the HC voicing can get a bit 'clacky' sounding with that wood combination to my ear.

All variations sound good to me, just depends what you want. The Sadowsky singles with an ash/maple vintage or standard is, to me, the 'Sadowsky sound'.

I don't think the NJ4's are an option with the NYC shop could be wrong though...

Couldn't agree more. My new UVJ has the Sad Singles. I was expecting a really bright presentation all around but the solid body and singles are very nice. They don't seem quite as loud or 'fat' as the NJ4's in my VJ but as I mentioned earlier that is easly fixed with eq. Also as Ken said the passive tone in both my Sads are just delicious. Thanks for Q-ing me into this Solid Ash/Single thing Ken.
