Not an expert on the German or NYC models, but happened to know that one fact from a recent post. I’ve focused on the MIJ line.
I have accumulated 3 TYOs (Teppei, Modern Edge 4, Verdine 4) and 4 Japan Metrolines (RV-4HPJ, MV-4HPJ, RV-4, MV-4). All but 2 were pre-owned. All are great basses.
No Will Lee and no NYC. Yet.

I need to find the post but Roger posted not long ago cautioning against buying a used Sad without a warranty. Which would only leave Warwick.
My interest has been in a Kikuchi Will Lee.
Me too. The Teppei is similar to the WL, but without the mid boost.
I’ve been fortunate. I have had but one small issue (bad pot) that was quickly and pleasantly solved by West Coast ace tech @maurilio. As you’re on the other coast, I suppose you’d go directly to Roger’s shop for non-warranty service if needed.

Truth be told the last time I bought through a Japanese dealer (my 64 CS Jazz) I got socked with a 10% customs bill.
Roger cautioned against buying new Sadowsky basses from dealers outside of the US as you might run into warranty issues. Buy a used one wherever you like.
Customs seems inconsistent on charging duties. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. I should think a USA bass returning home would be duty-free for sure. MIJ basses should be charged no more than 8% duty.
The JPY is around 127 to the dollar and the Euro is $1.08 as of a couple of days ago. Good time to buy overseas, if you’re the adventurous type. I’ve had consistently good service from Ishibashi and really great service from Ikebe-gakki. And yes, do take Roger’s advice seriously. YMMV.

Yes. Yoshi Kikuchi trained with Roger Sadowsky for a time and then set up the Tokyo Sadowsky shop. The Japan-made lines were TYO (masterbuilt), Metroline (team built) and most recently, Metro Express (assembly line). All superb IMHO.
Tim, as @R&B stated, yes... I have a beautiful MV4 in a trans white finish (which is 'antiquing' very nicely, btw) and the quality is superior!
*Also, your words 'Kikuchi Will Lee' are the best representation of a sneeze I've ever read... if you've ever heard my aunt let one go, you'd nose what I'm talking about.
