Club Sadowsky!!!

Wow.. my Dub bag seems to weigh more empty than my Porta Bag with my Sadowsky in it.

However, it's more the 'bad' design IMO than the weight that really turned me off to that bag. The single zipper design with that relatively flimsy divider between basses is not a good thing.

The Mono gives you 90% or more of the protection in a much better designed bag, and also the advantage of being significantly lighter. The unique 'opposite side' zippers are worth the price of the bag... brilliant, and it eliminates the need for those funky 'split handles' with the velcro. (of course, the Dub eliminates the need for those types of handles by using a single zipper, but that's not a good trade-off for me). IMO!
Getting off topic here, but I've never felt the divider was flimsy, and it's definitely not heavier than a portabag with a bass in it. Your memory is not serving you well on this one, Luke. :)

I have to disagree there. I'm literally holding my inCase SlimBag (the single bass model) and Portabag right now (I have too many of these bags laying around ), and the SINGLE inCase (I have the original model... don't dig the new one at all) is noticeable heavier than the Portabag (much less the DUB). Again, not a huge issue, but with a double bag, every 1/2 pound is key. Just to put it in perspective, I just checked the weight spec's and the Mono DOUBLE is 3.5 pounds lighter than the inCase single Slimbag (and about the same weight as the Portabag single)... almost spooky light, given the protection. It's about 4.5 pounds lighter than the DUB... cant' say if that is meaningful on not to an individual.. it is to me big time.

I still love the original inCase Slimbag design, but you can't get them any more.

Again, the weight of the DUB, while among the heaviest of the double bags that I've experienced, was not the killer for me. I would not recommend the Dub to anyone at this point due to the cumbersome method of extracting the basses, which requires the bag to be set flat on the ground for the most part. I agree, the center divider is not so much 'flimsy' as that the whole design is a bit funky. IMO again.

IMO though... as always... if you dig it, you dig it.:)

Edit: I THINK this all might be a moot point anyway. Didn't inCase leave the musical instrument case business? I'm not sure, but I think they pulled out of the category. Does anyone know. I don't think they list the gig bags on their site anymore. Maybe they started a separate site for musical instrument bags. Not sure.

Sorry for the OT... back to Sadowsky love!

I like the mono, and the fact that I can pick either bass without 'digging'. Not having much storage space is not a problem. I love the portabag, but carring two bags/cases is a PITA. I also want good protection and a soft bag won't do it for me.

I tried to do a search, but the words double, gig and bag are too common around here for the search engine, so, since what I'm looking for is going to keep and carry my Sadowskys, I'll ask here:

Simple question: which double gig bag should I buy?

Check out mono cases at http://www.monocase.com/

or Igig cases at Link Removed

both are GREAT and are my current favorites. The Igig single I have is the best case/bag I have ever seen! The Mono is a whole new level of double and I have one on order now...

Peace,

T

EDIT - SORRY! Guess I should have read through all the posts before posting...LOL For me it is a SINGLE IGIG or double MONO all the time now...

LOL @ black pumps, and thanks, Ken! I think you've talked me out of the iGig. I generally don't store much in the instrument bag - coupla' cables, small tuner, a few business cards, yada yada.

Also, referencing a post further back (and for once bringing a thread back on-topic instead of derailing it....ain't easy being me), I totally second Ken's comment about the M5-24 copping a Precision sound. To my ears, soloing the front pickup does the job so well that I've resisted the temptation to chase after the real deal. :)

That's not what I disagreed with. :) You said the dub was heavier than the portabag WITH a bass in it. That's what I disagreed with. :)

The points I think we disagree on, is how significant the weight diff is, and how much extra protection is offered by the inCase design over most other non-hard cases, especially the more traditional bag type designs (like the Mono and Mooradian). I obviously think the protection is more significant, and the weight is less significant than you do, but that's ok. :)

iGig bags are really well made, and yeah, they have a huge abundance of pockets, so if that's somebody's thing, they should top the list, BUT, I do find myself rarely using mine because all those pockets and zippers really add to the weight (as long as that's being discussed here). My iGig is easily the heaviest non-hard case I own.

I will say one thing on the whole bag/rigid case issue... the Portabag from Sadowsky is definitely my current overall favorite non-hard case. Period.

It's particularly light weight, really well balanced and easy to carry, offers superb protection, great neck support, and the perfect compliment of pocket space in the simplicity of only two zones (a really big one, and a fairly small one, so you get to decide where to put stuff, instead of a manufacturer trying to figure out how to partition space for you with zippers.)

Now I'd like to see what a Portabag dub might be like... ;)

Ah... I was being a little 'overdramatic' to make my point with that statement. It was meant as a bit of a joke. So, +1 (although, interestingly, the lightest of Sadowsky basses at a little over 7 pounds, and the 6 pound or so Mono single isn't that far off from an empty Dub at around 12 pounds!).

Just FYI.. the Mono provides MUCH more protection than the Mooradian... it has a true hard top and back like the incase, and 'relatively hard sides', closer to the inCase than the Mooradian. So, the Mono is a true hybrid, versus the Mooradian, which is just a VERY high quality 'traditional' soft bag. It's a very good blend of weight and protection IMO and IME.

Cool. I would really like to check one of the Mono's out. Been surfin' their site. Only 8 pounds empty, dual zipper, tho the zig-zag thing is kinda' odd..

What is the zig zag thing? Edit: I just read that. It's nothing... they are just describing that one zipper is on one side of the bag, and the other is on the other side. Both zippers are 'straight' and of traditional design. Amazing how these guys can come up with fancy copyrighted words for a relatively simple idea. However, having the zippers on opposite sides is very cool... great design IMO.

I agree. After the initial "What the...?", it makes a lot of sense to have them on different sides.
Really? I'm not so sure. I kinda' like the idea of just having the gig bag sitting behind my rig on its side and being able to access either bass like slices of bread in a toaster... without having to turn it over each time. I'd actually think digging in the dub would be easier.

You don't need to turn this over at all. The cool thing with this bag is you don't have to lay it on the ground like the DUB. Just use it like a regular gig bag (i.e., leaning upright against the wall or whatever). If you do want to lay it flat, both basses are still accessed from the 'top', it's just the zippers open from different sides and they open to totally isolated compartments.. That's the beauty of it. If feels just like a single bag when using it, which I guess was their design goal. Zero issue IMO and IME.

I hate double bags in general... but I love this one. As Tom mentioned, and I mentioned earlier, the only downside I see is that the main pocket is 'typical size', and only really good for the standard bass stuff, versus the huge iGig pockets. IMO though. All these features and design options would appeal to different users differently.

I really want to try out an Estrella gig bag at some point. They look to be incredibly well made. Link Removed

I had one of these for a while, and it was VERY nice. It is more like a standard bag than a hybrid though (it had side walls like the hybrids, but they are soft, more like the iGig), with soft top and back. It is as light as the Mono, and has a bit more storage, but not as much protection. These bags used to serve as the Fodera gig bags, I believe. Nice stuff, but IMO they kind of got left behind when these 'hard/soft' hybrids hit the scene.

Until the Mono came out, this was actually my dual bag of choice, due to lightweight and 'reasonable' protection. The standard size was not tall enough for a full size J though, but I assume you can order an 'extra long' if you need it.

I have three, but I'm definitely not "done". :) I may never have more than three, but I'm fairly sure I haven't found all three drop dead keepers. I'm starting to think I might like an ash/maple PJ5 a bit better than the alder/brazilian, but we'll have to see on that one.

Edit: Oh, and yeah, Tom, you DEFINITELY need to get an ash/maple JJ5 someday... DEFINITELY.

I have one, and I'm definitely done (I'm a poet!). Perfect spec for me, and I can get pretty much any tone out of it that I need to!:bassist:
