Thank you for the info on when the chambering began. My '97 ash/maple JJ5, of course, is not chambered and that bass is a killer. And my RV4 is not chambered and again another killer bass. I may need to chase down someone, locally, that has a later NYC Sadowsky for a comparison. I really don't believe that it could be that much better.:D Of course my good buddy BartmanPDX should have his Will Lee in a couple of weeks but I'm thinking that that may not be a fair comparison.

I have been thinking of selling my '69 Fender Jazz and getting a NYC ash/maple JJ4. I've spotted couple of used NYC ash/maple JJ4's and I was trying to figure out if they were chambered.

Hey Michelle, What would be your take on that mix Ash/Mad. I have one also and its an unusual mix.
here's mine, I love the smooth but snappy sound.

Hey guys... do they NYs with single-coil pups ship with the 500k volume pot or the 250k? My older metro with HC pups has the 250k volume pot and I'm considering the 500k upgrade. Due to the fact that the volume pot hole needs to be enlarged, I'm weighing the labor cost against just installing single-coils. But if I need the 500k with the SCs, then I'll just have the pot installed first and see if that gets me closer to the tone I'm looking for - a bit more open with a bit more "air" around the over-all tone.

That's what Roger and Kevin told me last month. They also said that the HCs are being redesigned, and the new pickups should be available sometime this year. Hope I'm not letting the cat out of the bag.

Installing the 500K pot is no big deal. You'll need solder and an iron, Allen key, adjustable wrench, power drill and a roughly 1/4" bit. Took me all of 10 minutes, maybe 15, to finish the swap, but I'm handy.

Also, Im not affiliated with Sadowsky in anyway other than being an artist on their site and friends with them. My answers here come from knowledge gained from owning over 20 of them and talking personally to RS and members of his staff over the years. The reason I want to state this is that I do, from time to time, get PMs asking me things I either cant answer or choose not to answer being its truly not my place. LOL

I have a deep respect for the product, Roger, his staff, etc and dont want to step on any toes if you know what I mean.

Again, Im sure theyd be happy to talk to you about your color idea. Im happy to be included in this thread and discuss the brand and will continue to. That being said, the best way to find out pricing and the such is to email them or call. Kevin Drexler is the man!!

Would say that a 9lbs bass is probably not chambered?
I had requested info in that regard on my #4018 and there was no record of it being chambered or not. It's an ash body. Has great sustain too and very tonefull. I think it was crafted in 03 or 04.

If I'm understanding your goal, installing single coils will take you in exactly the opposite direction of 'open with a bit more 'air' around the overall tone' IMO and IME. The singles with be grindier, more mid present, not quite as 'deep deep' or 'hi hi' as the HC's.

I have not heard the 500K pot directly, but from what I know about raising the level of a volume pot, it should get you slightly more to where you want to go... providing the HC"s with ever so slightly more upper treble. I believe Vic put up clips a while back, and though it was very subtle, that's what I heard. To my ear, it made the HC"s sound 'more HC' versus moving them toward singles. IMO there.

That being said... I don't think it would be worth the upgrade. It sounds like the change was made in the production models based on a revision in the voicing of the HC's, which makes sense to me, since all this stuff interacts.
