I don't believe in pickguards on fancy tops. If I go spalted, no way I'd cover any of that up with plastic...

Jeez, give a guy a minute before you start wantin to swipe my new bass
Briefly:
the olympic white seems to not be screamingingly bright white, but have a slight vintage tint to it: fine by me
it weighs 9lbs 10oz, just like my RV5JJ: fine with me
it screams quality, like very other Sadowsky product I've played
the action was right where i like it; about 1/16 off the board at 12
i had to drop the p-pickup a bit to get what i wanted in terms of pickup balance
boy, new sadowsky blue steels got some zing!

Exactly. Pickguards look fine on solid colors, but on a top as nice as that? No way!
My 2¢: I'm a traditionalist and think Fender-style bodies look better with opaque pickguards even when they have fancy figured tops. Without the guard they look too boutiquey, and that's not my thing (I say that after having owned some basses with blingy tops and no guards).

I'm with FB on this. But not having played a Sadowsky PJ, I can't comment on this. I kinda figure that a Sadowsky has it's own thing going anyway. I haven't heard any active bass sound like my '63 Precision.

I know a lot of you don't like to put a pickguard on a nice top. Here's my take on it. I have a nice burl maple top on one of my bass and I decided to put a pick guard because to me its like a woman, Its like a nice Victoria Secrets lingerie. I find it more attractive when you can't see everything right away. Some men like a woman with nice lingerie and other like them completely naked. As long as in the end, that neck get to be played.

I usually try to avoid looking at other people's wood, but when they put pics in a thread, kinda hard to avoid it.

I hear you guys on the traditional look. I have a Zon lightwave with a gorgeous Koa top, and since it is a fretless and has no magnetic pickups, there is no real reason (functional or aesthetic) for a pickguard. I've got a Rob Allen MB-2 coming, and that is a similar story I think. But whenever I look over at my Metro RV5 PJ, it just looks right with the 59 burst and tortie pickguard. There is something that is just *right* about that aesthetic. The clear pickguards are kinda funky though - sometimes I am ok with the look, other times I think it is an answer to a question that wasn't (or shouldn't have been) asked.
I'm having a tough time rationalizing an extra $600 for a fancy top especially since I've got two other fretlesses with fancies (well, have one, another coming).
As long as in the end, that neck get to be played.
I'm not averse to playing with her end, but I'm not into the neck thing.

I understand the high level of interest in a PJ 5 string, but I have a hard time understanding why it's on a J body and not a P in the NYCs?
Where did it come into fashion to drop the P pickup in a J body rather then dropping a J pickup in a P body as the original mod was done way back when?
And finally why does Roger offer a PJ4 Metro in a P body, and the PJ5 in a Jazz body?

What an absolutely gorgeous burst on that bass and I REALLY like the xtra wide stripe that you spec'd. I'm not a big fan of the clear pick guard look as, IMHO it might tend to to detract a little from the organic look and visual expolsion produced by the finish you put over that AMAZING quilt top. Also, since you widened the stripe a tort guard would result in less of that incredible top being seen and maybe look a little confused against the quilt (as opposed to how a tort guard provides texture to a solid colored or natural wood-grain top.) No guard for me on that one.
One thing for sure, whatever you choose, that bass is going to be a real head turner. Amazing, Amazing, Amazing, nice spec job, incredible build. Congrats !!!
P.S. Waiting for delivery of a solid colored NYC P/J 5 this afternoon, C'mon FEDEX.
