I'd go with no PG at all. That is a nice looking top! I've had an NYC vintage 4 for a little over 10 years that has a top like that. It looks great with a PG, but I still find myself wishing I would have gone the standard route over the vintage route every now and then!

If you ever decide to sell your NYC JJ5.......drop me a line!

Has anyone seen a V5 with a control plate and no pickguard? That could be cool too. I'm also doing a bell cover over the pickup.

If you've got a PJ then getting a JJ might be the ticket - just depends on what you want. I am somewhat of an anomaly though as I really am not a JJ kinda guy. I got a Metro PJ alder/rw, and like it so much I figured I'd get an ash/maple JJ to cover the other ground. But the JJ just isn't the tone that I hear in my head or feel when I play. The PJ however just kills for what I end up doing. I'm going to order up a NYC PJ to drop some weight. The downsized J body on the Sadowsky is incredibly comfortable, and with a light NYC example the bass just vanishes when you hold it.

Got off work, went home, let the critter out and rammed some chow down, and split for rehearsal with the RV5-PJ.
The guitar player has an ooooold carvin head and 115 cab we keep there, so I use it. It ain't the grandest thing ever, but it doesn't "actively suck.''
As it was rehearsal and we were working on new material, I didn't spend a lot of time futzing with the PJ, I just set the bias to "all P," rolled passive tone back some, boosted active treble a skosh, and off I went. I think me and this bass are gonna be pretty good friends. Until I spend more time with her, that's about all I can say other than she plays out great, will be a nice contrast to my RV5-JJ, and is definitely has that Sadowsky thing going on. The blue steels are really alive; it may be that I'll switch to nickels, but I'll at least work it one of the two nights this weekend as is.

Thanks for the advice I'm kinda thinking along the same lines about a used purchase. It can always be re-sold if it's not exactly what your looking for. I figured most Sadowsky owners buy there basses direct without playing them first. There is only one dealer here in FL (Bass Central) about 3 hours away and Beaver just stocks the Metros. The Will Lee does sound like it's a hell of a bass. My main bass is a Fodera VW Classic with the PJ set up. I figured between that bass and a Sadowsky with the JJ set up it would be the best of both worlds.

Cool. Looks purty - I like both trans white and olympic with tort. Been working up tunes for an audition tomorrow and I think I'm swinging back to digging the vintage/classic look. I just think alder/rw looks "right" with burst/tort or offwhite/tort. Kinda warm and fuzzy...

Oh, and the PJ just kills for slap tone imho. And I'm not that much of a slapper...but this setup just has a growl that begs for the thumb. More so than JJ but I think that is just my heretic bias

On further thought to my used missive ... if used Will Lee's are going for less than half of new I could send it to Wilkins for a refinish and still come out far ahead. Hmmm.

paperwork - yes, in an envelope
tools - yes, look in the outside compartment on the softcase
cloth - yes, in the case

Also should be a bottle of polish somewhere.

Yes there is. I think Rob answered this pretty well. The WL is for sure a fast bass. The neck is AWESOME! Another amazing instrument from Roger and his crew!

Got to try my Alder body/ Maple NYC JJ5 tonight at church rehearsal. I just put on a brand new set of Sadowsky SS black. I ran it through my Mesa M6-Berg AE410 combo (DI to FOH) with everything flat. Not sure how it sounds in the house, but in my mix it is warm, big and smooth, with some snap. Not as aggressive sounding as an ash body but smoother. It is hard to describe but it is more supportive then cutting if that makes sense. Nice player.

"Wow" this Will Lee bass does sound like it is the way to go. I think it's selling for $3775.00. But I also heard that his prices will soon be going up. You have to wonder if the Will Lee bass was a good business decision. Seems like it might hurt sales on his other NYC standard models.

One of my questions is the mid range. I'm looking for that Jaco sound also play a lot of slap style. I've noticed there is no mid control in the EQ section. Do these basses lack mids? I notice the WL model has a mid boast does it make that much of a difference? I have the opportunity to pick up a used one for $2500.00 a 4 string NY model, maple board is that a fair price? Or should I just go for a new WL model for $3775.00 and be in the hole for the next year!!! Any feedback would be appreciated.

I can simplify this. Jaco's bass didn't have a mid control either. In fact it didn't even have a preamp at all. He got ALL of his "burp" by simply favoring the bridge pickup and altering his right hand technique and position. ANY quality Jazz bass can do this. The mid control on the WL is an awesome feature, but it's not required to get the kind of sound Jaco got. I'll stop short of saying "the same" because there's too many other variables, but the main thing is, yeah, the WL is a super cool bass, but you don't need to get one to get the kind of tone you're after.

I'd recommend you make the trip down to try out those Metros (hey, who's not up for a good roadtrip?) and try them side by side with other jazz style basses they've got in stock. If you really them, then order a NYC - WL or otherwise. Sure you can get one used, but what's the fun in that?

Part of buying a Sadowsky, IMO is the experience behind it - talking to the crew, building it to your exact spec, etc. Even the wait and watching it come together is pretty cool. If I was buying a Metro, used would be a good route for me. But an NYC, I'd want to have it built especially for me unless something truly special came on the used market. Getting my Sadowsky was probably the most satisfying purchasing decision I've ever made and I feel I have a lifetime bass on my hands (that I couldn't imagine ever parting with).

Oh, and if I had it all to do over again, I'd do it exactly the same way, except as a WL model, particularly because I like what I've heard about the feel of the neck. I can't imagine the WL could in any way hurt the Sadowsky business - not sure if it matters (all things considered), if they sell a WL or just another NYC. If anything, I can imagine the buzz, the additional options and Will's name attached will result in more NYC orders overall - which is a good thing!

Hi Pete,

We offer NYC 5's on a P Body. Most are custom orders, but we've built a few for stock. Last ones I built were for (our very own) KoBass, and Hugh Mcdonald.
We've made quite a few PJ5's on a P body,too.
