Just a few questions for you Sadowsky owners. I'm looking for a super jazz bass and I'm thinking a Sadowsky would fit the bill. I've never played one and would be buying sight unseen. Im interested in a 4 string NY model.

One of my questions is the mid range. I'm looking for that Jaco sound also play a lot of slap style. I've noticed there is no mid control in the EQ section. Do these basses lack mids? I notice the WL model has a mid boast does it make that much of a difference? I have the opportunity to pick up a used one for $2500.00 a 4 string NY model, maple board is that a fair price? Or should I just go for a new WL model for $3775.00 and be in the hole for the next year!!! Any feedback would be appreciated.

Where did it come into fashion to drop the P pickup in a J body rather then dropping a J pickup in a P body as the original mod was done way back when?

And finally why does Roger offer a PJ4 Metro in a P body, and the PJ5 in a Jazz body?

Pete, I really really REALLY wish Sadowsky offered a 5 string Metro with a P-bass body. I thought it was gonna happen, but as noted the Metro PJ5 turned out to have a J-body. :(

As for why: well, converting a 5-string J-bass to PJ is relatively easy and inexpensive. Yes, a 4-string P-body PJ is offered, but the P5 body is different than the P4, just as the J5 and J4 bodies are different, so it isn't a matter of converting the existing PJ4 body to 5 strings.

Also, the unfortunate fact is that we five-string P-bassers are relatively few in number. Overall, I assume that Roger & co don't believe they'd get enough ROI on a 5-string Metro with a P-body. I'm glad Michael Rhodes helped spur the development of the NYC P5. With luck there will be a wave of requests for a Metro P5 so we'll get our wish. I've put my request in already!

I am really enjoying my Will Lee model at the moment. I've only had it a little over a week. But so far, it's great. I also have a few other NYC 4's and they are great as well. I'd go for the Will Lee for the versatility.

I'd go with no PG at all. That is a nice looking top! I've had an NYC vintage 4 for a little over 10 years that has a top like that. It looks great with a PG, but I still find myself wishing I would have gone the standard route over the vintage route every now and then!

To quote a review from Bass Guitar Magazine....

"The 2-band onboard preamp, which features a stacked bass boost (+13 dB maximum) centered around 40 Hz, and a treble boost (+13db) at 4kHz.
As you boost the bass and treble, the preamp attenuates midrange frequencies at about 300 Hz, producing big bottom
with little or no boom or muddiness."

The Will Lee Pre is the Same circuit as our 2 band with the added benefit of different frequency settings.

Since my original thread kinda got lost in the shuffle I'm going to re-post part of it. For those of you who did get back to me I do appreciate it.

Not sure I understand the "Jaco" sound since that is so tied to fretless. And you can't make a fretted bass sound like a fretless one.

I have a PJ, and the J pickup can get a classic "J bridge" sound, but I'm not particularly a fan of that so ymmv. $2500 seems in the ballpark for a NYC, but I've seen them for less (and more - depends on the details). If you can play the NYC before you buy it I think that is the best way to go. Although Sadowsky instruments are pretty consistent, they still all are a little different. Plus if you buy the used one and don't dig it, you can sell it for not much/any loss. With a new instrument you'll take a hit.

That said, if I played 4-string I'd be pretty keen on the WL (if it were a PJ :D). Looks like a very fast bass...

Sorry, if that didn't address the question.

I thought I had read on the site that an Ultra Vintage NYC could be ordered with a full sized P body and just wanted to pass that along. However, when going back to re read that paragraph from the website

i noticed it is under the 4 string heading only and not the 5 string section, so ???, I just took delivery today of an Ultra Vintage P/J 5 and it looked like a P body but now I'm not sure. I can tell you, it sure sounds good tho, BIG BOTTOM.

Nostatic,

Thanks for the advice I'm kinda thinking along the same lines about a used purchase. It can always be re-sold if it's not exactly what your looking for. I figured most Sadowsky owners buy there basses direct without playing them first. There is only one dealer here in FL (Bass Central) about 3 hours away and Beaver just stocks the Metros. The Will Lee does sound like it's a hell of a bass. My main bass is a Fodera VW Classic with the PJ set up. I figured between that bass and a Sadowsky with the JJ set up it would be the best of both worlds.
