Yeah that older JJ5/SC bass just KILLS. I got a great deal on it too. I've posted about this before, but the coolest thing about it is it just looks so plain, it's already got dings on it, but it just plays and sounds amazing.

I had a gig Tuesday night. I planned on using my NYC J4 (with Nordstrand NJ4 SC on it). We arrived two hours before the show for sound check & balance. After setting up my gear I had an unpleasant surprise, there was a crazy noise when I tried soloing one of the pickups. Really bad like nothing I've experienced before. We tried connecting my amp to different electricity outputs but it stayed the same. I had to go back home and bring my MV4 in order to be able to favor one of the pickups. Really sucks. The MV4 sounded great of course but I wanted my SC sound.
Now, nothing's wrong with the bass. The problem was the light/sound house system. Still, these things do happen and when they do I just can't use my SC equipped Sadowsky. I was lucky it was only 10min drive from my home. I'm seriously considering switching back to HC.
BTW, note that while playing I'm looking down to the song list trying to figure out which one we play

That really sucks. I have SC's in mine, but have not had that issue. Of course, I think I only switch to my bridge pickup once during the whole night. Total bummer. I think the SC's are the way to go though.

It sucks, but you are a lucky multi-Sadowsky owner, so you're good to go in any given situation.

I want to go with an UV Alder/Rosewood combo Jazz bass, but I'm not sure If I want to spend the extra bucks on the Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard.
Anyone here try Madagascar Rosewood with an Alder body on a Sadowsky? How does it compare to the Brazilian Rosewood?
I play mainly fingerstyle, so I'm going for a big, warm, supportive kind of tone, but I'd still like some bite. I've had an alder/morado combo before and it was great for fingerstyle, but I wasn't a huge fan of the slap tone.

I might take more advantage of the double mono case I got and take out two basses on a regular basis.
I would check for the Ash/Morado option. It may be the right solution for your needs, and less costly.
Roger posted a few weeks back on this thread that Madagascar was very close to Brazilian in looks and sound, at a more reasonable price.

Yep. No matter how well shielded or grounded, an SC is still an SC and there are simply some environments where you have to either 1.) never solo, and maybe even never favor one pickup, or 2.) tolerate the noise, or 3.) go with humbuckers.
I'll even go beyond that to say even with humbucking systems, depending on pickup design and overall shielding (including shielding internal to the pickup), there are also some venues where you'll still have noise.
BTW, it was most likely the lighting. Dimmer packs are CLASSIC for this kinda' thing... even if they aren't on your same circuit, but I think especially if they are.
Believe it or not, there could still be cases where this isn't true, but then that would likely be true for all pickups. Just have to see.Considering the amount of noise I had with the SC I'd say that the Sadowsky HC are DEAD quiet. This gig was the ultimate test, and they delivered total silence
I've only played the HCs on Sadowskys... and with how awesome they sound, I can't quite see why someone would want SCs... IMO, I see more advantages to having a great sounding pup sans hum vs. a great sounding pup that you have to fight...

Because you don't always have to fight it, and because a lot of people, such as myself, actually prefer the tone enough to make it worth the risk of having to fight it sometimes. Again, it's not like I don't like the HC's, they're wonderful... it's just a bit different of a sound, so it's a very personal pref thing.
I have a UV70 with HCs in it and I do notice a little scoop, still a great bass though. I do however have "other" J style basses with single coils and as a live player who doesn't do serious studio work I've never had an issue with hum. Most of the time a slight favor of one pickup before the hum comes in is all that is needed but even in the case of soling a pickup on a gig the hum is never noticable to be an issue.
If you like the HC sound no need to consider changing.

Honestly, if you think about the audience it doesn't really matter. They will not hear any difference. However for me as a player the instrument responds differently (sound wise) which might have an effect on the way I play.
Exactly, but then in turn, that does of course affect the audience experience, so even though it's not a direct connection, it's a very real connection, so IMHO, it DOES matter to them.
That's true if the player allows the tonal difference to affect his performance. I love the single-coil sound... there's a certain purity and presence to it. But I know for a fact that dealing with nasty buzz from poor electric conditions would affect my performance far more than the relatively minor (IMO) tonal difference between SC and HC.
P.S. I'm not trying to sway anyone's opinion, that's just my own take.
