I broke down & bought a couple bottles of "Grolsch" beer today. Anyone know why? ....Nope...lol... Their "swing top" bottles have these heavy red rubber washers that make great strap locks. They even LOOK cool & work great if you don't have to remove the strap every time you put it down - they stay put.

I've been away form the forums. My 17 wk old kitten had to have her leg amputated yesterday. just a freak accident with one of the other adult cats. Dislocated her ankle and the Doc said that the best option is to amputate. crap. It's just too severe to fix....which is his specialty. :crying:
I won't post a pic 'cause it's really sad. :crying:

Sonic Blue PJ (reverse) 5 String with rosewood board
Natural 24 fret 5 string with soapbars and rosewood board
59 burst 24 fret 5 string vintage Jazz with maple board

I'll post a pic of the Sonic Blue PJ when I'm able to get a decent shot.

Alrighty then. Update on a few things. Vic came over Friday night with my sadowsky NYC, which he swapped the HCs to SCs and added the 500k pot (major thanks Vic BTW) and he also brought over his older solid ash/maple NYC with SCs, the Ash/maple metro with the newer sadowsky SCs (by nordstrand), and his metro ash/maple PJ with the newer sadowsky pickups (by Nordstrand). So all together we compared 4 Sadowskys (what is the correct plural).

First of all, the change of the HCs to SCs and the 500k pot was a major improvement for my tone goals. Mine is an ash body/morado board and the change really makes this bass perfect for me. The tone is a lot more even sounding or less scooped, the low b is stronger and it now is edgy instead of polite. The HCs sounded great for more of a modern tone, but the SCs are more traditional sounding and they just have some grind that I really missed with the HCs.

When Vic I and I compared his older NYC and his newer metro 24 with both agreed they were very similiar in tone. Both had the same set of strings (aged about the same time) both are non-chambered so the only different variables is a slightly different body style, some extra frets and they older pickups versus the newer pickups. To my ear the newer pickups might have been a touch brighter, but the difference was so slight it may have just been difference is string age or a slight diffference in VTC. IMO, the SC pickups from sadowsky sound the same regardless of the supplier as the should right? They are wound to Roger's specs and I could imagine with Roger's suppliers there are pretty tight QC requirements.

On the PJ5, ya those things just kill. I love the solid body metro on those as I think that chambering a PJ may take the tone in a different direction for my goals. I would love to try Vics metro PJ5 side by side with a NYC PJ5 just faor comparison. Now who live close and has a NYC PJ5?:ninja:

A couple minor clarifications...

It's true that previously Roger offered the SD based pickups for his SC J5's, and while the Nordstrand based J5's are new, he still offers the SD based pickups. In fact, the ones I put in your bass were SD based. So simply saying "older vs newer" might be a bit misleading since both are actually still available, and the shop considers them interchangeable.

Also, the extra bit of high end might possibly be explained by the shielding differences. I can't guarantee it without ripping the shielding off an SD based set, which isn't going to happen, but FWIW there's a theory about this that I think holds water. The theory is, if you wrap the ground can around the pickup more, you loose a touch of high end due to grounding out some of the magnetic field. The SD pickups have a LOT more shielding on them than the Nordstrand based pickups. Now, that said, the SD based pickups will probably be quieter in a nastier environment, and IMHO they have plenty of high end. Based on that, I may actually do a fuller can around my Nordstrand based SC's, or, I might just order a set of SD's to play with.

The truth is most likely that they're both so close to each other in high end response and quietness it's not a big deal, but since I love to play around with this stuff, I'm probably gonna' mess with it and see.

I definitely agree the improvement in tone was significant on the ash/morado bass. If it was mine, I'd have done the same thing in a heartbeat.
