Does anyone have a Sadowsky with the optional master grade Braz. Rosewood? Pics?

Anyone have an idea, besides looks, what the difference is between the Morado, Madagascar, Braz, and master grade Braz. would be?

Are the upper options as "durable" and carefree as the morado?
The Morado on my old RV5 was like stone. (in a good way)

I got to spend sometime with the PJ last night after installing the new pickups.

I am very happy with part of the change. I do prefer the tone of the Nordstrand-built P pickup. It is a bit more articulate and has a slightly better mid presence. I just think th overall tone is more defined than with the other pickup.

But, I am having a problem with the Nordstrand-built bridge PU. It is an HC PU, but there is a noise in it that sounds like cycle hum. I have triple-checked every solder connection and even took it over to a friends house last night so he could look at it. He said the solder joints seem fine.

Here's the really odd thing. The hum becomes more or less pronounced depending on the position of the bass. Last night, I could turn 90 degrees in the room and it would almost disappear. But, if you rotated the bass as if it were lying flat, it would start again. I have never experienced anything like it.

If I can't figure it out, I think I may try the new P and the old HC bridge PU. They don't match very well cosmetically, but the hum is unacceptable. Which is unfortunate, because I do really like the way the PU sounds. I think it matches the P quite well.

I know about this. There has been a very recent update to the NJS regarding the grounding scheme. I don't know if they're "upgradable" or not. Contact Carey and see what options you might have, but it is environment dependent if it happens, and the pickup is operating normally for that version of it.

It's been available for a while as an NYC, but only as of this spring in the Metro line. The Metro version is brand new.

Your 5249 has a beautiful figured top. Really nice bass.
The PJ reverse thing on my bass has been annoying me lately. I ordered it that way to be different but when I look at it, I feel like I'm looking at some kind of mirror image. I heard that I can rotate the pickups and just order another pickguard. I'm looking into that. Your metro pj is a beauty.

You can only set the P pickup back to the normal config if the bass underneath is routed to allow that. I don't know if all reverse P's are like that or not, but just pop the pickguard off and you can tell right away.

I think I figured it out: in my original post I saw the pics because I was still logged into my mobile me account. When I looged out I couldn't see it anymore myself.

I just had the SC PUPs installed in my MV5. Vic is completely right (IMO). The SCs adds the mids back, and takes the bass to a whole new level!

On an unrelated note, has anyone changed the string spacing on their fiver to 18mm? I just can't get used to the 19mm. I would love to even get to 17mm, but don't think that could be done without changing the neck.

Yes, I know I could contact Sadowsky and ask them. And yes I know the strings won't "properly" line up over the pole pieces of the pickups if I change the spacing. But I was wondering if any had any "real world" success doing this. I'd assume it would involve just swapping the bridge pieces?

From page 1 you may remember this post from juriscon. He got a smokin' deal on a NYC Will Lee on ebay.

My (new to me) NYC Will Lee was delivered this weekend. LOVE the tiger's eye finish. Looks, feels and sounds awesome but sadly I am not digging the 1.45" neck. I don't necessarily need 5 strings but find my Metro MS5 neck more comfortable. I like the mid boost but am still experimenting with the freq. and level. Anyone have any recommendations for eq settings w/mid boost?

A few days later I got a PM from juriscon and he asked me if I was serious. Well, I sure was and I was able to get my deposit back on the MV4-WL I had on order and bought Craig's for the same unbelievable price. The lovely FedEx lady came today and the bass totally rocks! It is in fantastic shape.

So, here is my new to me Sadowsky NYC Will Lee!! Came in the awesome portabag as well.

Thanks, Ken! I rocked the Uber 212 last night at practice with the ShuttleMAX 12 and it totally killed! I got a big theater show next weekend so I should have some vids to post!!

Couldn't adjust from his MV5 to the narrower neck on the WL.
The bass is in perfect condition! There was a thumb rest mounted on it that I quickly removed. There is a small screw hole in the pick guard so, I will probably order a new one. Other than that...totally mint! And, the price was right!!

I miss her already, and am struggling with what I want to order for a build... Vintage P-J 4 OR Vintage P-J 5 ??? THAT IS THE QUESTION? (I want both... but later...) BTW this bass has Brazilian RW finger board.

I play mostly classic rock, but occasionally do a pseudo-jazz gig (totally 'Real Book') and also play bass in a church worship team.

Here are some old posts, not the exact answer to your ? but close

maple fingerboard---the brightest--best for a MM slap sound
ebony---less bright than maple but the punchiest--onset of note is more immediate
morado---brighter than common east indian rosewood but still warmer than maple or ebony
madagascar---very close to brazilian in tone and looks. More available and less expensive.
brazilian--almost completely gone. the king of fingerboard woods IMHO. I have good inventory. Warm, solid and round.

This is my opinion, based on building over 4000 NYC basses during the last 30 years. From brightest to warmest.

Maple---tightest and brightest. best for slap. can produce more string and fret noise than others. Requires a finish to keep from turning dirty and grey.

Ebony--not as bright as maple. most immediate attack and punch of all our fingerboard woods. Note is more fundamental and less overtones. Best for fretless.

Morado Also known as Caviuna, Bolivian Rosewood or Pau Ferro. Although not a "true" rosewood, I have been a fan of this wood for fingerboards for 30 years. Also used a lot by Stu Spector. Grain is very tight and smooth. More warmth than maple or ebony, but tighter than East Indian Rosewood. Excellent wear resistance, even on a fretless. For fretless, produces a somewhat more "acoustic/upright tone than ebony.

Madagascar Rosewood A less expensive alternative to Brazilian Rosewood. Many boards have the spider-web like grain of Brazilian. Rich reddish brown colors. Can be more open grained that some others. Tone is the same ballpark as Morado and Brazilian.

Brazilian Rosewood For me, the King of tonewoods for fingerboards and acoustic guitar sides and backs. Beautiful browns and blacks. Wood has very high oil content. Banned from export out of Brazil in log form since 1969. Currently protected by the CITES treaty which prevents shipment between countries without intensive permits. Same treaty that protects tortoise shell and ivory.

I personally believe, IMHO opinion, that all things being equal, the fingerboard can have a bigger influence on the tone of the bass than the body wood.
