This bass also sounds and plays great! My visit was oriented toward exploring various J-configurations, with which I don't have much experience, but I started and ended with this axe so as to calibrate relative to the Metro R5-24 that I own, but did not have on hand. As much as I liked all of the basses I played that day - especially the Will Lee instruments - I walked out of there thinking about how much I dig the sound of the soapbar-configured basses. This instrument was delightful, and if inclined to order an NYC modern, I'd definitely consider this wood.

I'm gonna guess that sales with this wood will be slow until we start to see reports about how this wood sounds and holds up in the field. Personally, I'd like to know if this wood is more susceptible to dings or dents than alder or ash.

These comments are extremely helpful... thanks! Interesting question about softness. I'm also curious about appearance... but I'm guessing that if paulownia had an attractive grain like ash then we'd know about it already. :P

Well, to each their own of course, but I've never needed more for this kind of up front go/no-go decision... especially if one plans accordingly to include a gig.

Anything requiring more time than that would be the kind of more subtle thing that could happen even with very familiar stuff, and there's really no way to anticipate that stuff anyway (IMHO).

So maybe not 100.00% moot, but pretty close for all practical purposes for most people with a decent amount of playing experience, I would think.

I don't mean that in a bad way... it's just that, I've found after you've been at it for a while, you get really fast at picking out all the most important points to figure out whether something is worth the purchase for the extended run... while the potential for flip is still there, the risk is small enough that the purchase still makes sense.

Just MHO/IME tho.

I really do try to get at least one gig in the trial period; that's really helpful to me.

You won't get 7 days if you buy from a Music Store or an individual....

Granted, you may discover after a few weeks or months that the bass is not "the one" for you, but you cannot expect a maker to be able to do more than we do in that regard....

In my case it took owning multiple variants of Roger's axes, all bought used, before I honed in on EXACTLY what I wanted. The good thing about the used route is that 9 times out of 10 you can get exactly what you paid out of it. Then at that point selling my used NYC PJ5 and adding about $1600 didn't seem so bad.

This is a tough one. As has been TB documented too many times, I am fickle. I never tend to form a really solid opinion about a bass for much longer than seven days. (unless there's something blatantly obvious).

But, if you look a the Sadowsky business model, I certainly understand why they can not do anything more. Each bass they build represents a significant investment for them. I certainly wouldn't be comfortable with those investments "exposed" any more than that.

This is why I typically decide to buy used if I can find what I want. You can always get your money back as long as you take care of it.

I wouldn't hesitate to order a custom NYC at this point, but there's no way I would do it without some experience with Roger's instruments.

I just bought a Metro WL-4 from Bass Central and I had a 2 day trial. 7 is generous. Luckily, I knew within 15 min that the bass was fantastic, and that I'd keep it.

So in addition to the pickguard I got some other Sadowsky stuff! This is all stuff I normally would just buy, but I have been out of work since the end of September, so when relatives asked what i wanted for Christmas, this was it! Being that I got the Hybrid PJ used , there wasn't much with it in the Sadowsky case, so I wanted a cleaning cloth and the truss rod adjuster. I will attempt to install the D-Tuner tomorrow.

Oh yeah, thanks to those who complimented the pickguard pics!
