At this point, it is difficult for me to believe that RS would offer something that didn't completely live up to the Sadowsky name.

If it says "Sadowsky Guitars * NYC" on it, it's going to be a killer instrument. It doesn't matter if he made it out of old shipping crates and leftover parts from a '73 Zenith Chromocolor.

That said, I guess with all of the tone wood discussion that goes on, people do want to put it into a category. To the reading masses, FWIW, all amazing basses are either ash or alder. My mahogany Sadowsky is equalling amazing.

Here's a Christmas season "standard" (with a twist :D ) that I thought you all might enjoy.
It's some session guys having fun during some down time in the studio. It's been making the rounds forever around home here. Nobody seems to know anymore about it. There may have been eggnog involved as far as I can tell.
Hope you find it as funny as it was intended to be.

I believe that the images are a bit saturated. I will find out tomorrow. It was going to be on display at NAMM 2011, but I couldn't stand the thought of everyone touching it! LOL!

Now, I can start saving for the Sad 5er...:D

Build quality is guaranteed to be amazing on any Sadowsky, but playability and tone are always subjective. I happen to love the Sadowsky playability, and the tone of my alder NYC P5 has been perfect. So, last year I took a chance on a beautiful trans blond over swamp ash Sadowsky P5, even though I didn't care for the swamp ash Fender and Lull P-basses I'd recently owned. I figured "it's a Sadowsky, it'll be killer". But after 3 months of trying very hard to like it... trying different string sets... I realized it didn't have the tone I was hoping for, and I traded it back in. The 7 day return policy did not help me here.

So, it's perfectly valid to worry about the unfamiliar, whether it's wood (paulownia) or pickup configuration (the Modern 24). Now that I know paulownia is similar to alder, I'm much more likely to take a chance on it. If Roger had said it was similar to ash or mahogany I might still consider it, but I'd probably want to hear a paulownia bass for myself first.

Yes, of course, but as I also said, with Roger's eval policy, this is a moot point, because that policy is specifically in place for this purpose.

Could it be paulowniaphobia? Can someone describe the tone of this wood? Closer to ash, alder, mahogany, other? It's 7.3 pounds without being chambered... that's pretty amazing.

I played this axe during a visit to the Sadowsky shop last month, and it does indeed sound like a lively piece of alder - in fact, I thought it was alder at the time. This bass also sounds and plays great! My visit was oriented toward exploring various J-configurations, with which I don't have much experience, but I started and ended with this axe so as to calibrate relative to the Metro R5-24 that I own, but did not have on hand. As much as I liked all of the basses I played that day - especially the Will Lee instruments - I walked out of there thinking about how much I dig the sound of the soapbar-configured basses. This instrument was delightful, and if inclined to order an NYC modern, I'd definitely consider this wood.

I'm gonna guess that sales with this wood will be slow until we start to see reports about how this wood sounds and holds up in the field. Personally, I'd like to know if this wood is more susceptible to dings or dents than alder or ash.
