Club Sandberg (part 2)

So CME kinda accidentally set off a fire alarm... at least it's all resolved now.
Haha, yes. But in so doing they forced me to look around and I found another that set off my heart strings. Torn between two basses...black, cream, TT or TM...

But I was also very happy to see that Sandberg monitors this discussion and responded quickly. That certainly makes me feel good about buying one!

FedEx dropped off my new VM5 today. I haven’t had a lot of time with it but initial impressions are really good. Except for the strings. I don’t like the stock strings at all. They seem like GHS Super Steels (same grey silk and rough feel). I don’t want flats either. Anybody have a recommendation?

Maybe DR Pure Blues or D’Addario XL.

Hi David,

ok, then we´ll get in touch with CME to get that issue solved.
A lower action should not cause zero fret buzzing. We´re setting up all basses individually by hand here.
And if there is a problem with too low zero frets, then we need to figure out what went wrong and why.

I hope next time you can order a Sandberg without any issues.

Best,
Mike

Things like these are worth remembering when thinking of buying a new bass.
My own experience ordering my VM4 was brilliant. I did not have to deal with Sandberg directly as the dealer did all that, but there was a bit of coming and going in communication and Sandberg seemed very helpful, accommodating, and quick to reply.

I am not sure when I'll buy a new bass, but next time I do, Sandberg will be again top of my list of considerations for sure.

I felt the same about mine. I didn't like the strings at all. There's an upper midrange that just grates and can't tame it well enough to my satisfaction. Best I can do is turn the treble down a tiny bit, and bass up a tiny bit. That seems to scoop out some of those mids... but if you overdo it, it ends up removing too much and getting too boomy.
Good news is... the strings lose that annoying zing very quickly (at least in my hands, I did play it a lot). But different strings would be a good move.

I bought a Schecter Model T two years ago, and when I got it I had some of the same annoying mids I got on the Sandberg. The Model T is equipped with EMG pickups and 2EQ preamp and the EMG EQ was just no good to adjust that (I am not a fan of 2 band preamps, but the Sandberg one is quite decent). I put a set of DR Sunbeams and... what a different animal it became. Lovely.

I have a set of Sunbeams for the Sandberg, but I haven't repaced the strings yet as I've found a sound I really like for my new funk band and I'm scared to lose it :D
I know, I know, but I'm a bit silly like that with string changes... I never like any new string at first, so I wait until I can't wait any longer

I really like GHS Pressurewounds on my Sandbergs. The D'addario NYXL's are good too if you like something a bit brighter.
Not a fan of Sandberg strings either.

I just got this note back from CME:

“my techs went and setup the bass yesterday and it seems like after setting in there really appears to be no issue and I think youll be happy with the way the bass performs.”

Good to go?

Having said that, I was able to locate a cream TM4, that I think may be a little older but still new, for less than the black TT4. Plus it has a rosewood fingerboard which is nice. Such decisions!

Good to hear, but I will get into this anyway, just to be clear, there really wasn´t an issue.

Turning up the bass a bit and turning down the treble is what I tried too. But grating is a good word to use... just too much. The B string also isn't as lively as the rest of the strings. Almost feels dead. I think I will try different strings and go from there. This is a brand new bass so I doubt the strings are bad, just not my taste.

I'm into my 3rd custom build with Sandberg. Their post-sales customer service is very good, and helps seal the deal for me.
