Cocky "musicians" in the Audience.

Heh I know this all too well. One of the jam sessions I get ribbed for turning up with 5ers. I usually just shrug it off. In the cover band though it is useful just to avoid drop d tuning etc. (although as a fan of interesting instruments , I have a hohner with a de tuner bridge ...)
the fun part is turning up with a 8 er though !

I had this happen one New Years. Guy kept getting drunker and kept saying crap about how he was better blah blah. I ignored it. I was wireless and part of our spiel was for me to walk around and greet people during a Peter Gunn intro. I walked past his table and felt a tug on my headstock. I turned around and he was trying to detune my bass. Ironically when I turned to look the headstock slippid from his grasp and hit him square in the mouth. He didn't say all that much the rest of the night.
I also do the "wireless wander" and dance with the crowd on a couple of numbers, if any **** tried to de tune my bass they would find him in the kitchen skip in the morning, he got off light with a chipped tooth or two.

Don't know what is up with my photobucket, but to be fair, here I am in all my female glory Saturday night:

You guys have some awesome comeback lines btw... definitely stashing those for later... and I REALLY hope that dude wasn't hitting on me because looking like a crybaby at your bar table definitely doesn't do it for the chicks... ;)

Well you are definitely attractive enough for him to be hitting on you but I doubt that was what he was doing. He is probably a male chauvinist who believes that woman shouldn't be playing in a band and gets a kick out trying to knock them down verbally. I see it a lot. I recently had a guy tell me that women should not be working or playing in a band they should be home getting laid and cooking dinner. The sad part is that he wasn't kidding. He really feels that way. Unfortunately, the world is full of idiots.

I'd hit it and come back for a date too....err....umm...yeah, no wonder he was an arse.
Cute girl, playing bass.....
Tool.

Big kudos to KillerNeuron!

I haven't had quite the jerrys kids like that approach me on gigs, but some came close.

Once I got chastized by an audience member for playing a 5-string electric on a jazz gig (and your point is??) and that I should've been playing an upright. That whole thing to me is just so lame and stupid, as are people who make such pronouncements. I just don't have time to indulge their juvenile thinking.

The only other ones I've ever gotten are "Fender Snobs" and their ilk. Like what freakin difference does it make what brand or type of axe I play? If it works for me, great.

That dude was probably drunk and thought he was flirting. Weak!

I bet. He was probably trying to impress her.

Ahahaha.

+1. Some guys are just plain BAD at it, and think that something like that will impress her.

There is a whole slew of girls that do get attracted to the a-holes. LOTS of them. It works on them, although it sure seems like you're not one of them. This guy was going about it wrong, too.

There's a book called "The Game" about real life womanizers and their techniques. About 1/4 of the guys in the book are really big jerks, 1/2 the guys pretend to be jerks to get the girl, and 1/4 the guys are actually decent guys who still get the girl. THe guys who are or act like jerks (according to the author) hooked up with tons of very pretty girls by exploiting their insecurities.

Maybe this guy was thinking along those lines, and he failed. There's also a very good possibility that he's just a big giant ass.

Ug. Fender snobs belong in the lower rings of hell near people who purposely pee on the toilet paper in public rest rooms as a prank, baby rapers and politicians.

I own a frankenstein P-bass with a Telecaster bass neck, and it plays beautifully. It's the only Fender bass I've ever picked up and liked except for a Squire Vintage reissue fretless that I'm still kicking myself for not buying.

Fenders generally do NOT do it for me at all. I don't like the way they play, the way they sound, think they're boring and uncreative instruments, and think they're overpriced.

I had one idiot ask me as I'm holding my Warwick Thumb 5er if I ever tried a MIA Jazz bass. I just rolled my eyes. "Yes, of course, you idiot, I've tried them. That's why I play a Warwick," is my general response.

How 'bout an all-original Fender P? :)

Well, I am in the military, and in an aviation community that sees few females... I think my place of employment has definitely turned me off on virtually all men that act like that, just because I work with so many of em! :hiding:

But show me a deeply intellectual musician with an appreciation for aircraft and I may fall victim!

I think after reading through this thread we can come up with two pretty good assumptions...

1. It's safe to say we're over-analyzing this dude. He was just an ass, period.
2. Anyone who goes out of their way to let you know they play and are better than you or that you're doing something wrong or that you're playing the wrong brand of bass is also, in fact, an ass.

agree? :)

Without knowing the context of the conversation in which the question came up, that seems like a pretty extreme reaction to a seemingly innocent question.
