I tried one out to see what all the hype was about and although it sounded alright, the feel and playability was awful. To each their own.

Jordy, I would definitely try a Wick before buying, especially going from a Geddy. If you decide you like it, you will probably need to "woodshed" on it for a few hours before a gig just because it is so different from what you play now. Just my 2 cents.

Wow, a Warwick is a bass that I'd never buy before trying it out. Those necks are about as far from a Geddy neck as you can get. I played a 5 string Thumb a few weeks ago and it really had a thick neck. I made that mistake a few years ago when I picked up a Corvette Standard. It was like trying to play a 12 lb. 2x4.

Thanks for the concern guys, its good to know you guys care. But Im going to GC some time soon to try em out, Im smarter than to buy something that expensive whilst totally ignorant of them.

In all honesty, I really want a 22-24 fret Jazz bass, a la Sadowsky used, but its just not going to happen any time soon..

EDIT: Thanks for knocking some sense into me guys. As much as I want a new, boutique-esque, bass, Im rushing into things. Im going to continue saving, put all my money away, and buy something truly extraordinary. Hopefully the GTG will shot me something worth saving for!

Right now my favorites are:
Sadowsky, Warwick (depending upon how the necks feel to me, weight, etc), a used Valenti, etc.

Sadowsky has always been my GAS brand.. well just see what happens!

Good thinking. :) And honestly, you can't go wrong with a Sadowsky. They're definitely worth saving up for.

Phew, but saving close to $2k is a lottttt of money for a 16 year old! Man.. that sounds unreachable..

Im also looking into Laklands. I have always been a fan, and theyre much cheaper.. Skylines, at least.

But a Sad is still my main GAS.

You can't go wrong with Lakland. The Darryl Jones jazz bass is the best Jazz I have ever played period. Many who have played Sadowskys and Allevas say that the DJ is as good if not very close in quality, playability and tone. A brand new DJ can be had for about $1,300 or a used one can go for around $800-$900. If I ever get a J bass again, it will be one of those. That and the Marcus Miller are my 2 favorites.

I would love a Marcus too. And Im not even saying it has to be a 5er, but every time I play someone else's 5er, it seems like that feels more comfortable for me.

Just keep your seat belts on, you guys are going along for the ride! :D

I went to GC a few months ago and they had an old Warwick Jazzman on the wall. They had that on the wall for over a year. It was nicked up and the fretboard had all kinds of gunk on it. I plugged it in but it didn't work. the strings were fried on it and the preamp was too. It was going for $3000 but the guy said I could have it as-is for $500. I thought about getting it and fixing it, then trying to turn it around for some money but I passed on it. It may still be there and he may give you the same deal.

I was kinda in the area today so I stopped in to GC to see if this was still around. I found a Corvette Jazzman that had a tag for $3K, so I assume that was it. The pickups had some sort of junk on them, but it looked like it could be scraped/ cleaned off. Other than that, it wasn't in horrible shape. I didn't look at the fingerboard closely at all though. I was mainly comparing the neck to a Geddy for Jordan's sake. The difference is really noticeable. The Warwic definitely has what I would call a baseball bat neck.... VEEEEEERY chunky. Wasn't entirely uncomfortable, although the action was high, but it still felt okay. The Geddy's neck was pretty small in comparison. It's gonna come down to personal preference, me thinks.

I'll echo the sentiment that Laklands are amazing. Hade a Skyline JO5 for quite a while last year, but ended up selling it due to finances. I was planning on dropping an Audere pre in it at some point, which would've made that thing killer.

This is why you guys are on my "PM these people if you ever need anything" list. :D

Thanks for the trial, Nic. Im really, really wanting to save for a Sadowsky... but thats incredibly hard as a minimum wage teen.. :atoz:

That was the one, quilted maple top and green stuff caked on the pickups and fretboard. Did it work when you played it? It didn't when I tried it. That's why they offered it to me for $500. The preamp was fried, that and it needed a set up sooooo bad.

They sell Laklands right down the street at Sam Ash. They had a blue DJ 4 string hanging on the wall last time i was in there. They also had a black 55-02 with the Lakland pickups and preamp. I played it but it needed a set up too. Plus, Sam Ash has horrible amps to test stuff out on.

No I didn't plug it in, I was worried about the neck more than anything....lol. That, and I was listening to a salesguy sell a couple of younger guys on the awesomness that is Acoustic bass amps. I'll give the guy credit, he showed the guys what the amp could do, and they bought it on the spot, so kudos to him.

Jordasch- no problem bro. I've played a Sadowsky once or twice and I have to agree... awesome basses. They have a fairly flat neck, which was really comfortable. I think the transition from a Geddy to that would be very nice. You've mentioned the $2K pricetag... are you talking about the Metro line? Keep an eye out here in the classifieds as I think they go for less than that used. I've never played a US Sad, only a Metro, and it was NIIIIIIIIICE.

As far as S(c)am (c)Ash, those Laklands have been there FOREVER!! I wonder why GC hasn't picked up on them?

Now that made me laugh! :bawl::D

Im not fully sure! I dont know the different between the Metros and non-Metros.

All I know is, I want a Tal Wilkenfeld-esque bass.. I wanna be her when I grow up... but in the most manly way possible. :D

The biggest differences in the NYC's and the Metros are that you don't get the fancy tops and the birdseye fretboards like you do on the NYC's and the Metros aren't chambered so they might be a pound or 2 heavier on average. However, if aesthetics and weight aren't a big problem then you will find no difference in either line quality-wise. Both play excellently and both have awesome tone. They use the same electronics so you still get that "sits well in the mix" tone with the Metros. I actually saw one for sale in the classifieds here last week going for $1350. He said it was played and had some dings but come on, $1350? I would have jumped on it if I had the money. My Valenti was $2050 when I bought it new but if you find one in the classifieds they go for much less than that. Nino's got one in his [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. It's the 3rd one down, all black with a maple fretboard. It's got the same pickups as mine and has an Aguilar OBP-1 for $1500. I'd stick that up against a Metro any day. Nino builds great basses.

You'll either be one ugly chick, or one pretty dude!

Seriously though, I've heard that quality-wise, the Metros are on-par with the US models, and they have the same pickups and electronics. I think it's like a stripped down version of a US when it comes to wood choices and finishes, IIRC.

In all honesty, I just want a natural 4 or 5 banger.. I dont need a chambered body or quilt top.. Thats not me, for now, anyways. Maybe some day.

And Capn, as much as I love Valentis, I refuse, absolutely refuse, to get another black bass.. I already have too, and I want some diversity. No offense to you at all! I thank you for the recommendation, but I just cant stand another blackie.

Maybe if a natural, all maple necked, 4 or 5 banger Jazz pops up... :bassist:

I just saw this one over on Harmony Central. If I had the cash I'd pick it up. What a great price!

Gar, if I had the cash as of now.. I wouldnt give a %~* if it was black or not!

Only loop hole is a 6er.. I have always wanted a 6er.. and Kwesi has an awesome Spector 6er for sale.. but again, I have over a month before Im even remotely close to enough cash, so its all a waiting/thinking game for now.
