Comparing Basses To Cars

The North American International Auto Show is in town, so I'm geeked & inspired. My work is in Product Portfolio Planning for a really big car company. Here's some of my analogies:

Fender = Pontiac Grand Am. They're everywhere, some are really cool, some are bland.

Sadowsky = Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Nicer than any Grand Am (or Fender) and supercharged to boot.

Fodera = Lexus Sedan. The more you see 'em, the more you like / want 'em. Keep looking for something bad to say about 'em. Haven't found it yet.

Alembic Series I/II = Cadillac Escalade. Big, purty, expensive, more horsepower than you can use sensibly.

Hanewinckel = Honda S2000. Sporty, hot, lot of bang for the buck. Don't see many, and you have to ask yourself "why not?"

Zon = Corvette. ("Whaddaya mean it's fiberglas / graphite? REAL cars / basses aren't made of fiberglas / graphite") Oh, and the performance.....my guess is a fretless Zon is like a top down 'Vette.

Music Man = Toyota Camry. Everybody's got one. Everything's compared to it. It's bullet proof.

Warwick = Audi A4. The shape is basic, but seductive. The materials are top notch. In the right hands it's a performance machine.

Conklin = Hummer. 7 strings!!! Why? Automatic tire inflators on every wheel? Why? Because we can. Drove a Hummer once. Now I can say I've done it. Same with playing a Conklin.

I have more, but it's getting late.

Peace,

James

...G&L - Mustangs...

Then, Fender Marcus Miller Signature Jazz Bass = Pontiac GTO!!! Big, Hefty, and Beefy!!! BOO YAH!!!

(ARRRGGG!!!!! HOW DO YOU POST A PIC?????)

Custom Curbows = DeLoreans. Were once very desireable, exotic, and sounded great, but lost their luster due to unpopular business moves.

Alembic = Corvettes. Still quality pieces, and after 30+ years, still going strong.

Mike Lull = Audi. Not your first choice, but if you ended up with one, you'll kick yourself for not having one sooner.

Fender - Ford (been around forever, most common)

Rickenbacker - Volkswagen (german name, pretty big company)

Gibson/Epiphone - Chevy (been around long, have cheap and expensive models)

Musicman - Dodge (the more modern american cars)

Yamaha - Toyota (the big japanese company)

Esp LTD - Honda (ehh..they have a few good models)

Squier - Kia (not that big and fairly new)

Rogue - Daewoo (new and crappy)

Hemi Cuda! Ah! I haven't heard that car/expression in years! A guy in my neighborhood used to have a '69 Hemi Roadrunner, what a scary car. It used to just spin the tires for the first 3 or 4 seconds, then catch up to and pass just about any other car it was racing like a cheetah to a gazelle. Hey, what about those Chevy LT-1 and L-88 engines. Although I was primarily a Chevy man, when Mopar came out with the 340 engine, it made me think again! Ah, to have a 4 bolt main block!

Thanks for taking me back,
Mike J.

There are two in Battle Creek now - a Charger and a Challenger - I've never seen the Challenger but my wife (retired realtor) sold a house to the guy who owned the car. It was for sale, $50,000. He'll probably get it.

I heard (no felt) the Charger pull into a gas station a couple weeks ago. Anyone who'd ever heard a street hemi with little or no muffler will never forget the sound

I talked to the guy a bit and he bought the car new. I offered to give him my wife, my house and all three kids but he had no intention of selling it - but that hemi was nowhere near stock. He pulled out and grabbed a bit of rubber through fourth gear and I haven't seen him since.

I used to work in an automotive machine shop when I was a kid and we turned out some pretty wild stuff nights and weekends.

Those were the days...

A guy the next street over from me has a 71 Hemi Cuda convertible. One of seven built in 71,his is one of the five that has an auto trans. He takes the car out duing the summer to "cruise night" at the local burger joint.Id imagine this car being as rare as it is is worth huge dollars, and hes not afraid to drive it.

Theres also a bunch of the winged Mopars around here(Superbirds,Daytonas)but they all have 440's.

The LT-1's and L-88's were pretty nasty, but dont forget about the LS-6,L-78,L-79,Z-16,and the awesome ZL-1.
