Compressor for Hard Rock/ Metal

I second (third?) the LMB-3. It's reasonably priced, solid, and gets the job done. It does hiss a little if you use the "enhance" knob, but otherwise it's pretty quiet. Also the BBE Opto-stomp is nice. Or at least was nice. I've heard that the newer ones are not as good.

Hi

So I am ditching my Line 6 Pod for grown up (i.e. real) effects, and need some advise on compression. I have heard that its great to go:

BASS - Tuner - Compressor - DI Box - Mixing Desk

By the way, by DI Box is an MXR M80. So I have two questions
  1. Should I be using a compressor at all
  2. What compressor pedal would be good/ best?

My 2 cents.

I for one love a good compressor pedal and have been using my EBS for almost 10 years now.
Used correctly, a comp evens out the tone and can add some considerable punch that allows the bass to cut through (certainly depending on the pedal and how you use it).
I recorded a few Classic Metal tracks a few months ago and used my EBS - works very well, especially the tube simulation not only adds punch, but also a touch of dirt'n grind.
121 pounds new.

There are A LOT of good comps out there. Check Bongo's website for more info.
Given your budget, I'd definitely consider a used one.

Another vote for the LMB-3. My band doesn't play metal, but we play a few rockers where I have to pick harder than usual for me (Foo Fighter's Walk) and the LMB-3 helps keeping things even. I keep the Enhance at the 9 o'clock mark. Another plus: can be bought used for 50-60 bucks.

He means he has an inadequate amp, and the comp built into it sucks. :)

Edit: I mean that in a lighthearted way--really I have no idea what amp he's using. But I will say that if a comp is making the bass hard to hear, then either it's a bad comp, or it's being used incorrectly.

yeah, I made that mistake years ago with the digitech bass squeeze, bad comp and me being ignorant, sad part was I had a awesome amp!! I went off sample settings in the manual, I always disappeared in the mix...
fast forward bout 12 years, I still kept the instruction manual, I now do the opposite of what I was doing, I compressed the high's a bunch with only a little on the lows, so I basically killed my attack which also turned me off to compression, in my defense, i wasn't aware of talk bass or ovnilab(bongos site), so live and learn...

I will say, the boss limiter enhancer is truly awesome for the price, never should've sold it in the first place!! I only use it as a limiter for my DOD fx25 though!!

The price is a little irrelevant if it genuinely will help give a wow tone, but it appears they are not so essential???? Right?
They are like icing on the cake, or mustard on the meat. The sauce makes the food tastier, but you can't live on icing or mustard. You have to start with good meat, good tone from the bass and good playing. If you've got those, then add some mustard.

Always love the food analogies!
