Confederate Flag over amps. Please no racism!

You know, they say it wasn't about slavery, I think it was, now.. how many poor white sots who had nothing fought a war and died for the rich land/slave owners? That one never seems to come up. I wonder what they thought of the flag.

but do you say things like this?

Yea, I guess I never really thought of it that way.

I'm trying to think of ways to convey the "we're from the south and we're rebellious'" vibe without conveying the "we're from the south and we're intolerant'" vibe.

Do you go out and want people to think you served? This oculd be brought up on many things, Is it wrong to have a marines sticker if I wasn't in the marines. YES it is, if you want people to think you are IN the marines, if you do it out of love and support for a family member or the general public/fighting for freedom then no it is not.

I wear a slayer shirt, I am not in slayer, if i starting telling people on here I was in slayer how would I be looked at on the board?

Right. Again, I'm leaning towards not using Confederate stuff and instead using the Bonnie Blue and Florida flag and using informative literature like azureblue suggested as a way of getting our message across. I think that will be more effective. Hell, we're from the Tampa maybe we'll use the Jolly Roger.

Billnc, you bring up a good point. I've never really considered that.

I am glad you are seeing the point that most are trying to get across.

Yea, I'm not set on it at all. I understand the pros and cons with it, and I want to portray my message in the most effective way. If the Dixie flag was the most effective way, then I would have no bones about waving it. But obviously the flag means more than what I want it to mean. The Bonnie Blue seems to be the most effective way of adapting a message.

Jolly Roger seems like a good alternative (again the Tampa motif). Plus the Bonnie Blue is similar to the Tampa Bay Rays colors (I wear a Rays hat on stage quite a bit).

Thanks to everybody to contributing in a mature manner (for the most part). I think this is one of the few places on the internet where I could post this thread and not get flamed to death, and for that I'm appreciative.

Plus, I think it's awfully similar to the Zapitista flag, see:

^Very similar motif. I could see it working to our advantage.

It's been pointed out a couple of times from a couple of different directions already but:

It's not your flag to fly. It's ours.

We despise those who have taken our symbol of history and heritage and turned it into a pejorative.

If you fly that flag, the people that don't get that will call you a racist and the people that do will call you a carpet bagger.

Pick something, anything else.

Same sentiments with the Bonnie Blue?

Like I said earlier, I have more attachment to FL than I do NY and I wouldn't move to NY if given money to do so (well... depends on how much money).

EDIT: our drummer is Cuban-American and his dad is an immigrant. Is our drummer or his dad not "allowed" to fly a Floridian or American flag?

If your music is really good, no one will care much about childish fashion statements, even if they are offensive (though many still hate Skynyrd, BTW). In fact, no one will care much about your music, even if it is superb. That is life.

Ask yourself, what matters more, looking like you are a rebel (you aren't), or being musically expressive and masterful.

BECOMING AN ACCOMPLISHED ARTIST IS AN ACT OF REBELION AGAINST ONESELF! That level of self-revolution scares people.

I wish I spent the time practicing I just spent reading this childish thread.

Here's a view from somebody with absolutely no idea about the American Civil war, slavery, confederates or anything else like that.

But here in England we have a similar issue that annoys me, so it may be relevant...

If your Scottish, Welsh or Irish, it is seen as perfectly normal to be proud of your heritage, and fly your flag when you like, (including slung over your amps)

However, if your're English, this is not the case.

The English flag (the cross of St George) appears to have been co-opted by the racists and if you are seen displaying it, or epressing some sort of national pride, then you too are condemned as being racist.

I'm all for the display of nation pride to wrest control of these symbols from the racists... (be it confederates, Nazis or the BNP).

Just my thoughts...

Display what you want. If you want to display the S&B badly enough that you're willing to take the grief for it, go for it. Lord knows we do. Your willingness to take that heat might just go a long way toward you earning your honorary Rebel card.

The crap we take for that piece of cloth has a lot to do with the depth of meaning it has for us and the more crap we get, the deeper it goes.

Nobody cares what else you or anyone else displays other than that.

Realistically, you're correct in that there are not a lot of people left in the south that are "real south" but I'll bet you lunch that everyone in Inverness will stand up and take their hat off if you play Dixie. They're Old South.

WOW! Thanks for that. I thought this was only here. Sorry to hear that.

I always enjoy hearing things from a non-American perspective. We were actually inspired by a British band to sling a flag over our amps (Gallows).

I think it is a sticky subject, and like I said, we're trying to give a social and regional pride message, not a racist one. The Bonnie Blue fits this.

And this is where my punk comes out: I really don't care if the southerners are offended by a "yankee carpetbagger" flying the Florida flag or the Bonnie Blue. I'm a Floridian, end of story. It's no different than people who wear Yankees, Dodgers, or Red Sox hats who don't even watch baseball.

And while many of you say "it should be about the music", I agree. But to make it in rock/pop/punk/metal/country or any other form of contemporary music, you need to separate yourself with imagery too. When I say Led Zeppelin, most people think of the naked angel guy (sorry, I cant think of what that's called). When I say Metallica, I think of Lightning Bolts. Sex Pistols? Union Jack or Anarchy A. The Ramones had Beatle cuts and leather Jackets, etc.

deep stuff here. as a northern yankee I still do not expect southerners - especially those who had ancestors in the war to not want to respect them. Although the overall cause was wrong, there were many honest and good men who fought believing that they were defending their homes and who felt that they were called and had to go. How do we - north and south look back at those men without supporting the idea of slavery? It would be great if we could figure that out. Good luck with your music and your decision on how to present it.

So if you really want to be punk, fly a Union flag and go "yeah, so what of it". Flying a Southern flag of any type is just "fitting in" and "conforming" to the local environment. You want an image? Be the Yankee who can rock with the GoB's. Getcha one of those slant-top Union hats and stick it in their faces. Push back. They'll never remember just another rebel flag. They remember Sherman.

Didn't think I'd be back here, but I am.

Great to hear the reflections from across the border.
We need more of it.

Are you seriously comparing the Cross of St. George with the Stars and Bars?

Hanging that flag is not rebellious or the slightest bit punk in any way IMO (maybe if you were synthy/dance band from Canada it would be kinda funny). It's more of a conformist symbol then anything, at least in the sort of values it represents. I've been into punk since I was a kid and it takes alot to offend me. So if I saw a band with confederate flags on their amps I wouldn't be offended or bothered at all, I would just laugh and assume they want everyone to know that are conservative/racists. I mean if you want to give the illusion that you are southern rebels, there are better ways to go about it.
