Rick Nash, more than anyone else I've seen, is the second coming of Frank Mahovlich, who was known as the Big M. Big, rangy winger with a cannon shot, a long, flowing stride, surprising agility for a big man, and a deft scoring touch. Just like the Big M.

IIHF has 68 member national associations.

Personally, I'd generally love to see more sports at the Olympics but they have actually been cutting sports.

You guys were saying you'd collect he most metals of anybody. You finished 3rd, although you did get 3 of the 4 you wanted. Still, overall you underperformed in these olympics, Not as bad as Russia, but not what your olympic officeals were expecitng either.
I think Canadian Olympic officials said our goal was to win the most medals. Not sure if anyone actually guaranteed it. The Own the Podium program was a program to fund Olympic athletes through a combination of Government money and private donations. IMO there is nothing wrong with a program that sets the goal high and we did set an Olympic record for the number of gold medals won. We came up short on the overall number of medals but I think all in all most Canadians are pleased with our medal winnings. Nobody was expecting an Olympic record for Gold that's for sure. Early on it seemed like some of our medal hopefuls were simply succombing to the pressure of trying to win a medal at home. I admit I was getting p***ed off for awhile. The you realize that in a lot of these sports the time distance from 5th to Gold is less than the blink of an eye.
Russia has 7 or 8 times our population and the States has close to 10x. In that respect I think we held our own.
And we did win Gold in the hockey game. For a lot of Canadians that is good enough. Simply cannot overstate how important that one was to the entire nation.
Late to jump in here, but Canada won that game. Their best forwards were Toews and Nash in the game. Crosby got the OT winner, but he was stoned on the breakaway attempt earlier and other than that was largely invisible. I expected Canada to win in OT, but the whole time was hoping for anyone but Crosby. He's a great player, and if he stays healthy, hall of fame material but he is NOT the next Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux, and I'm sick of the hype machine around him - it's not his fault, but I'm still sick of it.

Huge props to long time Pens fans who remember the days of Rick Kehoe carrying the offensive load.
Mike - the analogy of Nash to Frank Mahovlich is a good one. He's a power forward who's still darn young, and I think if he bangs even more he could morph into a Cam Neely clone. This tourney was the best I've seen Nash play. The US was just overmatched offensively, and Miller could only do so much. Had Brodeur not been a sieve, I honestly feel Canada would have won the first meeting.
As far as disappearing forwards, how about Thornton. I saw him backcheck 1 shift the whole tourney. Heatley had a knack for scoring when it didn't matter. Does this bode well for the Sharks since they got their disappearing act out of the way early? Marleau impressed me, it was the best I'd seen out of him in a pressure situation, as did Pavelski on the US side. Nabokov, like a lot of the Russian team, melted down completely, same thing as my comments for Heatley and Thornton.
Congrats again to Canada for BOTH their hockey golds - the best team won.

It sure didn't help our chances that 3 of our top skiers were out with injury and our best speed skater was just coming back from an injury and couldn't perform up to her standards from the last Olympics. Between those four people, they had 9 medal chances. IMO, Own the Podium was a success, we set a Canadian record for most medals at a games, an Olympic record for most golds and won hockey gold. Not bad for a country with 30 million people and a severely underfunded amateur sporting program.

I thought the olympics were going to be a disaster at first. The weather was terrible because of the rain and everyone covering the games were making a big deal about there not being enough snow for the track, not to metion the guy from Georgia who died (RIP). I'm very proud to be Canadian not only because of hockey but because of how well our athletes represented us in every sport. I know I'll remember these olympics for a long time. I hope the athletes and the fans enjoyed the games as much as I did and they saw what a great country we have.
CONGRATS to Canada for sure. Hellava game with a not so fortunate outcome for the USA....But it was one of the best hockey games I've seen in a very long time. Canada earned it and as an American, I have to say that in one way I'm glad that Canada won that game and the gold medal. If they hadn't won, the collective psyche of the whole nation would have gone in the tank for the next four years.

You could say the German field hockey team avenged their ice hockey team's 8-2 loss to Canada in Vancouver by beating Canada 6-0 in the ongoing (field) Hockey World Cup.

While Canada did have a talented team, USA had a talented team as well. They were one of the top 4 teams along with Russia, Sweden, and of course, Canada. I don't think that's "nowhere near expected to even medal". You obviously do not watch hockey.
Kane and Parise might have been the bigger names on the USA team, but you can't say they were the ONLY offensive threats. Did Stastny, Kesler, Langenbrunner, Ryan do nothing for the team?
On another note, good job Hossa for being on the losing end...AGAIN! LOL
