Coronavirus discussion thread - NO POLITICS, or "POLITICS by PROXY"

One good thing we've noticed about the concern for COVID-19 is the reduced traffic getting into and around Seattle from the south end.
On Tuesday and Thursday of last week, it took us 65 minutes from my driveway in Olympia to the parking garage by Pike Place Market we use. Normally, that is a 75-80 minute drive.
Driving around on the streets was less stressful and crowded, and we even saw some open spots on the street.
The ride home wasn't much different, but getting out of Seattle for the drive to Olympia was seldom the slow part of that commute. The real traffic starts just past Southcenter.

IMO it's not going to be the virus that kills us as much as the viral spread of misinformation.

There are already lots of "funny" memes going around about how buying toilet paper isn't going to keep you from getting sick. That's right, it won't. What it will do is keep you from having to leave your house if you are quarantined for two weeks, so that you don't get lots of OTHER people sick. It would be nice if we could stop ridiculing people for wanting to be responsible.

I'll just stick to my bidet. Don't have to worry about toilet paper at all.

This is just the beginning. In our new altered climatic state, we'll be dealing with a lot of stuff we didn't have to before.
New altered climatic state? Well, that's super #$%$#ly correct, but if you are referring to global warming, ordinarily, virus born illnesses like the flu are diminished in warmer weather. Preliminary studies suggest that the Coronavirus is highly sensitive to temperature. It's too early to scientifically confirm if upcoming seasonal warm weather will diminish the virus's ability to infect people as ordinarily the case with a virus. But it wouldn't be at all unusual if this turned out to be what happens. Just saying.

Coronavirus ‘highly sensitive’ to high temperatures, Chinese study says

The testing protocols are very weak at present and make it hard to determine just exactly what the virus is actually doing. A PCR test for Coronavirus won't be very accurate for at least another six months until sufficient genetic data is gathered on the virus. Even then, PCR will never be specific. Only more specific than it is now. A serological test that looks for specific antibodies cannot actually differentiate a Coronavirus from other viruses. Current testing protocols are only useful if someone is experiencing symptoms of Coronavirus infection.

Here is an article that has some actual factual material about the Coronavirus:

‘Everything depends on where you got virus’: US & Russian top specialists explain odds of catching Covid-19 & surviving

Large and small gatherings of people especially in enclosed spaces will probably become increasingly unpopular for a while.

The media is hyping it a bit more than necessary in the states, but it is no joke. I'm a bit of a conspiracy theorist, so how seriously China was reacting to the outbreak was enough for me to sit up and take notice.

I currently work at an institution with a high population of foreign nationals and everyone has been on pins and needles for the last two weeks.

I'm not concerned about Coronavirus, this is just the beginning. Small potatoes.

I live in Padua, near Venice (the real one :smug:), one of the infamous red zone: we are in quarantine.
Hospitals will no longer be able to operate if the situation continue and from an economic point of view we are near the default.
To go to work I have a permit to travel on the street, so that if I am stopped at a roadblock I can justify my presence on the roads.
So no, it's a real concern! Keep in mind that we are free Public health, so tampons are made in all suspect cases and it is also for this reason that we are the third country with the most infections.

I'm sorry your going through that. Take care of yourself, brother.
Thanks man, you too. Me and my family are in home quarantine for 2 weeks now. Going out is too risky. Only one time per week we go out for shopping only necessary foods, with masks and gloves. Actually i cooked some breads today.

Now there I will agree with you! Maybe for different reasons. But we human beings seem to be heading for some "adjustments".

Intelligence is a Lethal Mutation/Sagan/Mayr/Chomsky:

"I’LL BEGIN with an interesting debate that took place some years ago between Carl Sagan, the well-known astrophysicist, and Ernst Mayr, the grand old man of American biology. They were debating the possibility of finding intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. And Sagan, speaking from the point of view of an astrophysicist, pointed out that there are innumerable planets just like ours. There is no reason they shouldn’t have developed intelligent life. Mayr, from the point of view of a biologist, argued that it’s very unlikely that we’ll find any. And his reason was, he said, we have exactly one example: Earth. So let’s take a look at Earth.

And what he basically argued is that intelligence is a kind of lethal mutation. And he had a good argument. He pointed out that if you take a look at biological success, which is essentially measured by how many of us are there, the organisms that do quite well are those that mutate very quickly, like bacteria, or those that are stuck in a fixed ecological niche, like beetles. They do fine. And they may survive the environmental crisis. But as you go up the scale of what we call intelligence, they are less and less successful. By the time you get to mammals, there are very few of them as compared with, say, insects. By the time you get to humans, the origin of humans may be 100,000 years ago, there is a very small group. We are kind of misled now because there are a lot of humans around, but that’s a matter of a few thousand years, which is meaningless from an evolutionary point of view. His argument was, you’re just not going to find intelligent life elsewhere, and you probably won’t find it here for very long either because it’s just a lethal mutation. He also added, a little bit ominously, that the average life span of a species, of the billions that have existed, is about 100,000 years, which is roughly the length of time that modern humans have existed."

Recent discoveries of cave art estimate we have been here around 50,000 years with our current cognition and higher mental function. 50,000 years is transparent in geological time, next to nothing at all. And look at our "progress" in that time. Intelligence was a Faustian Bargain, and here is the price.

The gloves might be useful. Masks will inhibit the virus from spreading in droplets from someone who is already infected. A mask won't strongly protect anyone from incoming infection. Any virus or bacteria for that matter can and does enter the body through the eyes, and the ears. You would need something like a space helmet (like the pictures of hospital workers wearing protective gear) with either highly effective filtration or an independent air supply, and the rest of the suit to go with it to be thoroughly protected. I spent some time in my childhood in the orient where medical style masks have traditionally been worn now for a long time. They are to prevent someone who is sick from spreading their illness. I would wear a mask anyway. Can't hurt. Some goggles and something over the ears wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

The articles I cited in my post above describe how often times, viral epidemics fizzle out after a while. Let's hope that's what happens this time too. Maybe you'll have time to get some good practice time in? Looking at your breads made me hungry!

I think it's in the media's best interest to keep people watching and clicking and I think fear mongering is a good way to go about that goal. I think it's in everyone's best interest to not be an ass and wash their hands and not cough or sneeze on people. Sure it's real. The regular flu is real too.
I agree! And I hate to be so cynical but right now I believe all news (FOX, CNMBC), the networks....all of them are driven by ratings and if a story as "legs" they will ride that pony untill if falls over dead! Money money!

I watch a lot of youtube at home. It's my primary form of entertainment aside from netflix. Clicking "not interested" is an ongoing battle. There's a tv in the hallway where I work. It's non stop alarmist. People gather around it like they don't have work to do. Yes it's a big deal but I don't wanna hear about it constantly. There are other things happening in the world.
