covering the shuttle 6.2 "tube display slit"

No, you can't cover those slits. Whomever told you the ventilation was handled by the side vents is giving you bad information. For starters, which way does hot air go? I'm pretty sure sideways is not the correct answer. I doubt the designers added the production time and cost for the vents because they need to be there. I doubt it was esthetics.
Somebody suggested a finer mesh to keep them out. That is your best plan. I have a travel trailer that has various vents on the outside. You can actually buy mesh covers to keep small bugs out.
If you cover those vents, you will be sorry you did.

Yes, correct. I was the engineer of record, I did the thermal design, the thermal models and the thermal compliance tests.

The heat does indeed go out the side, in the classic side to side ventilation scheme.
 
Guy who actually designed and to this day gives support for the amp model in question:
The primary ventilation is located on the left and right of the amp, it's flow through. The slots on the top are primarily cosmetic, and give secondary indication that the amp is powered up from the blue light behind the tube.

And how does it defy physics and go sideways instead of up? If you designed it, you know how it works. I'm not being rude are mean as some are in this thread, I am just curious. After playing tube amps from 1963 until 1976, my experience tells me inadequate ventilation is a killer for tube amps. Many have fans to move air. If your design avoids that, I'd be very interested.
 
Dave, usually a 12AX7/ECC83/7025 reside within a screening can that provides little, if any cooling. The tubes are designed with this in mind. With free air around it, no further cooling is required. Not all that much heat is actually generated by a pre-amp tube.

Edit: To add, if the amp was a full tube amp and not a hybrid, your points would be well taken.

No worries...

There is a cross-flow fan assisted ventilation scheme going on inside the chassis, with a slight amount of turbulence directed towards the front though the preamp tube really needs no additional cooling other than convection to the internal air volume.

Thanks for the info, and my apologies to you. I did not know you had designed this amp. I will say I have no experience with it, so I didn't know it had a fan. But, I'm sure you will agree that all other things being equal, reducing ventilation is not a good idea. My only intent was to try to keep the OP from damaging an amp.

Yes, iff an amp was designed with a specific ventilation scheme in mind, it's best not to alter it without knowing exactly what is going on and why. Often, not all of the elements of a cooling scheme are obvious and some can be quite tricky.
