Haven't read the whole thread yet, but I have loved this cover of Purple Haze by the Cure ever since I first heard it like 20 years ago. To me, this is how to cover a song when you are trying to pay tribute to the original. The Cure made this sound like a Cure song, which basically reinforces the fact that Jimi's tune was good enough to survive the translation. And it's pure Cure awesomeness at the height of their power:

That was a good album as far as tribute albums go.
many of them are bland covers that could be so much better...
